realistic steam operation?

Hello

Although I am agreat fan of trainz simulator I am a litle dissapointed on the realism level of the steam engines operated in CAB mode.
(version 2009 / Murchison)

I am a volunteer on a steam reailway (stoker/fireman) and therefore have some feeling for operating steam engines.

My biggest problems are: Steam generation. (much too slow) and steam consumption operatin a train. (bolier pressure drops unrealistic fast)
The combination of the two makes it almost impossible to drive a steam engine in CAB mode.

2 questions for the forum:
-Which engine in the train simulator operates the best according to others.
-Do I oversee something so that my conclusions are wrong?

Thanks and regards from the Netherlands

You should be able to adjust the characteristics of a loco by tweaking the enginespec file associated with that loco. Find the loco in question using Content Manager and view the config.txt file, you should see a line starting with "enginespec" and also containing <Kuidxxxxxx> - this Kuid is the eniginespec file that could be edited.

Rather than editing the existing enginespec file it would be best to copy (clone) it and then edit the copy and reference this copy in the locos config.txt file.

Sorry I can't help with details of what changes to make (that is outside my knowledge) but there is probably some documentation in the TC3 Content Creators Guide and the Trainz Dev Wiki.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the Steam Engine Specs were revised and updated in TC3 and has been carried into TS2009/2010.

Try the UP 0-6-0

Hi Guus --

Have you tired the "Loco UP 0-6-0", kuid 69871:2061 and tender :2060

It performs well for me in Cab Mode providing the correct driving technique is used..

Excuse me for the offtopic, but I have to ask it.

Where is this museum located? I mean this summer I´m probably working near Apeldoorn, maybe if it´s near I can visit it!

Danke en Tot ziens! ;)

Edited: I just saw it, it´s in horn, a little far away from my city xD So we´ll see.

I also have the guess that you've used the steam engine specs for 2006 and earlier versions of trains in your 2010 version. This has exactly the prescribed effect. To have good working steam engines for 2010 you have two choices. You manually change the outdated spec of your locomotives against specific e-specs for Trainz version 2.8 or higher ( you'll find a whole bunch of those e-specs from Author "paulhobbs" for English engines as well as a few that where written by me for some US engines on the download station). The other option is to download the 2010 version engines of Author "Billegulla" and I believe "S301" which are Australian or even New Zealands that already have the new engine specs.

Cheers Kay

BTW.: Philskene has also written a few e-spec he has hosted somewhere else for download. Just search his posts it's written somewhere.

The best perfomer as yet is the latest Duchess pack the only faults really
are the lack of scoop and it lacks anyway of telling whats left in the water tank, Oh and the blower/jet control in cab is wrong they have it up along side the manifold shutoff not right, should be under regulator lever.

It does steam as it should, and you can run with Injector on and set it at a reasonable water input.

You are correct in saying that many other models do not perform as they should i.e. they lose pressure far to quickly and take a long while to recover the A3 Colombo comes to mind

As for tweaking for better performance it is possible but lacks enough information in the manuals to do it properly.

I have a reasonable knowledge of steam workings as I was a BR Main Line Fireman in the 50s and 60s so I reckon I know what they are all about.

Also if this Sim had the working physics as good as MSTS it would be in my opinion be the best of all of them.

Why not make your own e-specs?
Get "Universal steam e-specs 09" from the DLS and follow the instructions.
It's not difficult.

Bill.

Don't seem to work for me what you see in edit is all I get ?

Would it be possible to email it to me ?

Worth mentioning I think that the Duchess engine spec is one of mine and was produced using Bill's spreadsheet in a few minutes. The only thing I did was to increase the 'fudge factor' to 1.00 instead of the usual 0.60 - this increases the power by about 40% over the theoretical value and makes for a loco that is easy to drive and makes plenty of steam.

Do not try and muck around changing individual values in the steam container as they are all interrelated. To make a meaningful change you need to change all of the values at the same time. Just use the spreadsheet (don't forget that you don't need Excel to use it, download OpenOffice instead), it's a lot easier.

It would be nice even to get hold of it the spreadsheat that is what Bill has put up does not seem to work for me and I have it 3 times already ?

The Netherlands are a small country.
The city of HOORN is not that far by train.
send me a mail at guus@brinkel.com to check if I am on duty on the engines

Water/Coal

Can anyone tell me where I can find the water tank capacities? in the config files please and coal if possible.
