Raw video train derails near Baltimore:

The two dead were on the bridge, and were not CSX employees. The family said the girl and her friend were Tweeting photo's (possibly using a camera flash) from the bridge about 10 minutes before the crash, and they haven't heard from them since.

I'm sure since the Engine crew survived, the NTSB will find out if the train was put into emergency braking (at speed) caused by the sight of 2 girls on the tracks (on the bridge), blinding the crew with a flash camera at Midnight.

That wreck occured near where I work....

I cross those tracks near Mt Airy, MD.....

That line is pretty well maintained, they have been doing a lot of upgrades and grade crossing replacement.

For the life of me, I have no idea why it is suddenly en-vogue to have your picture taken ON railroad tracks.

A senseless tragedy... one that, sadly, others usually don't learn from.

EDIT: The wreck site is Ellicott City, MD. If you watch closely, you will see a caboose on the left that is parked at the Ellicott City Train station museum.

What a wreck. I too noticed the caboose parked next to the tracks.
I totally agree, why do people suddenly find it ok to start taking photos of others on the tracks? (Well, I can figure one reason why...)
Anyone think that there will be some sueing in the near future?

Hmm,

I would think that the twitter pics in combination with any video from the locomotive will probably negate that.

I am not a trained investigator, but having been thru that area many times, it looks like the Engineer went into emergency and the train piled up.

We will have to see what the professional investigators say.

Yea, the accident was probably caused by the train being thrown into emergency. Other factors such as the gradient, as well as the curvature had to factor into it as well.

About the first, not sure about that. From the CNN video I saw:

At 30 seconds in, you can see a straight section that is not really straight with snaky curves in it, CSX will have to decide if that has any impact. It is known there are straight sections throughout the country like that.

ABout the second, one report on TV said is has, in this area, been considered for years to be a teen habit of 'hanging out' in that area including on the railroad bridge. That tells me many people local knew of this and didn't consider it a big deal until now. When people have an attitude like that and something like this happens, usually there are no lawsuits but the behavior about the incident area changes.

jeez, those common sense lacking, teenagers should have not been on railroad property to begin with, good thing the train's crew is okay.
