Raising Viewpoint?

How do I raise the viewpoint so I can view from level of rail bridge?

Start Surveyor and click Options. Select Surveyor Settings. If the Compass movement slider is in Mouse, use the arrow keys to change viewpoint. If the slider in in Keyboard use the Mouse with right button pressed.

My problem is that the Viewpoint/compass is always on the ground. In this case I wanted to check the scene from the level of the bridge while looking straight out. I know that I can put an engine on the bridge that raises the viewpoint to cab level but I wanted to do that without needing to set an engine on the track. There are man instances when it would be nice to have the compass/viewpoint above the ground. But it seems that onyl way to do that is from an engine cab or if you build a temporary hill to place the compass on.

Guess it boils down to being able to move the compass vertically.
Thanks

I agree that the zoom out is a technique but if you want a view, straight out & nearby, from an above "ground" level I can see no way you do that. The viewpoint/compass is always glued to the ground. Therefore, if you want to see something close up from a cab, or human, viewpoint it is difficult. Guess I am too used to being able to raise and lower the viewpoint in other programs. The compass, glued to the ground, is annoying to me. Not a major issue.

Since there is an alternate height for the viewpoint when in an engine cab it would be nice to at least have that view as a handy function while fiddling about with scenery.

Dont know if it works in all versions, but try "alt" + "U" or "alt" + "Y". To return to normal veiwing press "Esc"

Odd functions but the compass remains firmly glued to the ground. Like I said it is an annoyance to me but apparently most customers like it so plodding on.

Lay BNSF50 Invisatrack in the sky, to what ever height you wish. Use MonkeyWrenchModels Trackside Lantern Camera or Drivable Signalman as a loco, and take screenshots from that Cab's perspective.

What part of Alt-U don't you like?
It would appear to me to answer you request perfectly. It can place your view point at any convenient height and you can look in any direction including straight up and down. You can move anywhere in your map, no invisible tracks and cars are required. Great for taking screen shots from all angles and for inspecting objects up close. When in this mode there is no compass so what do you mean by it remaining glued to the ground?

Just plodding along
