Railway Networks

Ca Plane Pour Moi
I have been thinking about creating a fictional 200 mile long main line in Britain with branchlines and industrys. I got the Insperation from the Razorback Route, is there any one else who has built a massive railway network and who long did it take them to build it.

200 miles of track is a lot of work and a lot of creativity. I gave some thought about this. The original layout I was working on was cut in half. It's now about 55 miles of track and it's still a fairly big layout. I'm in the process of gathering people to help me build it.

Take a look at some of the pictures of my route. The work I've done to this point took about 4 months and the real building really hasn't started yet.

I'm doing a 40 km route, track laying is the easy bit, sceenery takes aaaaaagggggggeeeesssss but I do have 2 kids. So far I've spent around a year on it (as well as other projects) so I've probobly spent 9 months on it and I've done most of the track work and about 5% of the sceenery. My advice after trying a big route is take it in 3 - 4 baseboard sections at a time that way you won't get too daunted about the amount of work left to do.

There are a few time saving measures like making hills, lay steep track then use the smooth ground tool then delete the track (just remember that ugly gap between the ground and the track is 20cm then you can copy and paste to other areas of the layout. Also google earth can help alot even in fantasy routes, have it open in the back round so you can alt - tab to it and the google earth rouler is accurate and helps no end.

Hope this helps.

I love Trainz and I love route building. I just finished 120 miles and never again! Smaller projects from now on....

There is of course nothing to stop smaller projects being done in a way that allows them to be merged into a larger project :)

There's a 1000km route in 10 sections on the DLS. Just search "1000km" in the title. While each section can be a standalone route, they all will link together as a very long working route. I wonder how long that took to make?:o

If you have the time, the best thing about TRAINZ is you will run out of time before it runs out of options. No model railway problems of "no space left in the spare room"

A few years ago I started our local area in real scale using Ordinace Survey maps and phots etc. Ended up with a route streaching from Birmingham to Tamworth and (nearly) Nuneaton. Unfortunatly that was back in UTC and I haven't found out how to transfer it into 2006 yet, any suggestions anyone (please :'( !!!!)

you can just do what you want when you want and it can be really satisfying to adapt bits and bobs from the DLS to end up with some scenic item of other that looks like what you know the real one looks like.

The only problems I came across are:
1. The bigger it gets the harder it is to keep up with the landscape.
2. Some scenic items (houses etc) are not really in scale so don't "fill" areas as they should.
3. Urban areas need careful thought as they can bugger up frame rates when running the sim.
4. SAVE, SAVE and SAVE again. Big routes crash more easily (boohoo)

GO FOR IT CHIEF!

just take it in small steps
it took me 12months to do 70kms
depending on terrain ETC
simpley do X amount then murge route then see how yuo're doing

cheers,

Thanks for the info is there any routes in Londen that start from a large terminous and head north I would like it to be fictional but if it looks terrible enough to be fictional please tell me

I suppose it is a case of how long is a bit of string?! It took me an ace of a time to recently finsih a whole city tramway (and I know I am going to get slapped for not putting it up!) with 244 odd boards. Time after time I went off and on the ting as it was based on an actual system (Glasgow). I have now started an actual rail company here in Britian and their total trackage is just above 200 or 220-ish. I expect it take a while though beacuse you need to take breaks now and then or you get put off. However i expect this to take me right into the early winter at least as idon't live near the system i am replecating and it is slightly awkward to get to!
