Question on lighting issue rolling stock skins

Good Afternoon,

I have downloaded some custom skins of different boxcars for Trainz 22 and have ran into some issues with the lighting. As I will show in the pictures below on the side of the boxcar that faces the sun it appears normal, however the side in the shade compared to other skins appears bright still as if it is not in the shade. Is there any way I can modify the file I have downloaded so that the side in the shade does not appear as bright? In my attached images the 2 middle boxcars are the issue and the 2 on the ends are what I feel the normal appearance should be similar to.

Normal side (sun):

Shady side (shouldn't be bright):

Thanks!

Also aside from the whole side of the boxcar, is there a way to ensure that the reporting mark numbers are also normal and not bright white?

Quite fixable if you have the right software. The textures are PBR materials, so they can be made non-emissive by making the red channel of their parameters maps pure black. This fix will only apply to your local copy of the asset though.

The screenshot from Photoshop shows boxparameters.png from Majekear's 50ft Boxcar CENTRAL VERMONT bpd# <kuid2:56063:130377:1> after I edited its red channel to pure black. Before editing, the colour of that channel was a dark red (= dark grey on a grey scale) which means it was slightly emissive.

The screenshot also shows a Colour Space setting called Linear RGB which must be used when editing PBR parameter files.

The running numbers have similar emissive problems. They use a parameters file called parametern.tga. For some reason, that file is in Index Mode, not the usual RGB mode. To see and edit its red channel, it needs to be saved into RGB mode first. So I've done that and removed the emissive from both the main texture and the running numbers on Majekear's Central Vermont boxcar. I compare it here against his (unedited, emissive) Conrail boxcar.

Sunny side:
The main texture and especially the running numbers on the Vermont boxcar are not as bright as on the Conrail boxcar, although the difference is not so stark in the bright sunlight.

Shady side:
The shaded Vermont boxcar is obviously darker than the Conrail boxcar, but while the running numbers on the Vermont are also darker than on the Conrail, they still seem brighter than they should be. I don't immediately know why, but it indicates more work on the running numbers is required.

Beyond the texture issues, I think the LOD transitions are jarring and could do with some more work too. Majekear should be the one to sort out such problems. While you can fiddle privately with the textures like I did, it might be wise to keep a watch out for official updates of Majekear's assets.

Since you haven’t replied to your own thread, I assume you have lost interest in it, but for anyone else interested in the problem, Majekear has been contacted and made aware of it. He has not been active in Trainz for a while but there’s a chance that he might fix and update the emissive rolling stock.
