Question about 2004/2009

White Pebble Rapids RR.
I have been a devotee of 2004 and my layout and content are for this version, My question is this: Will I be able to bring my large layout over to 2009 without having to rebuild most of it ?
Thanking you, Jeff.

Hi Jeff,

I too am in the same 'boat' as you.
Although I have TRS2006 (& the service pack CD) I've never installed it,
preferring to stay with imho the less troublesome TRS2004.

However the TS2009 looks too good to not purchase it, so I have.
I await it's arrival mid-December. But I will not be in too much of a hurry
to install it, nor start transferring my huge arsenal of stuff across.

Having no experience with the dreaded CMP first-hand,
I am somewhat apprehensive as to how best to go about this.

But I am sure by the end of the Christmas period, we will have an army
of Trainzers 'out there' who have conquered the heights of the great unknown,
to lead the way, into the 'promised land' of TS2009.
Sounds a bit like a Biblical Epic Journey, eh?. :hehe::o:eek::(:):D:wave:

As a recent convert to TS2009, I must admit that CM2 which replaced CMP is a very much better and docile animal. There are also many shortcuts that have come to light that hasten creation routines.

There are still some bugs, only to be expected, but I think Auran are trying to do the bug fixing a lot quicker than in previous versions.

When you get TS2009, move your route to it, there will be many errors that CM2 finds that TRS2004 ignored but usually they are easy to fix. If it all gets too much and you want to go back to the comfort of TRS2004, all you have lost is time, the original is still there to welcome you. The compatibility mode allows you to run most items even if they are faulty. I have transferred the DHR into TS2009 with very little problems, nearly all the faults were missing textures. Lovely to see the mountains with a 5000 metre view distance

I like the new version very much. So far I have found nothing that wil make me return to TRS2004 although I may still use that version for creating simple things if I find it quicker than with CM2

One thing it has, TRS2006 had it as well, is the ability to set and save changes to the junction trigger radius. You can do this in TRS2004 but it doesn't get saved. Another piece of icing on the cake is the 5 metre grid, just think how we could have used it on the DHR.

Go on, do it, you know you want to. Don't be scared, it won't bite.

Cheers

Peter

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the encouragement, & your comments on how you've found
TS2009.
I also really appreciate you summarising & sharing your findings with CMP & CM2.

Over the coming few weeks, & the release of the service pack,
hopefully most of the remaining bugs & areas of concern
('broken' bits; ie things not functioning), will become,
as Winston once put it:-
"....will become 'things-forgotten'. Submerged below the surface of remembrance.

Dead, buried-at-sea. Never again to resurface."

Thank you to Noel and Peter, fellow travellers on this Trainz trip along the yellow brick road. Thanks cobbers.
ps: G'day again Peter.
Regards Jeff.

I too have stuck with 2004 in the past. Found 2006 not nearly as good as the tried and true 2004. I have developed some very large routes in 2004 using AI to run them.

I installed 2009 and migrated all my work over to it. That was a four day job finding all the dependencies that were needed to run the routes. This is especially true if some of the dependencies were not on the DL station.

But once up and running I found the performance to be at least as good, if not better, than in 2004. As a result will probably stay with 2009, however I might still develop some additional routes in 2004, just to have them there, and then migrate them over to 2009.

The only issues I am having are with CM2. There are still some things that need fixing in my opinion and which they say they are looking into for sp1.

Overall I think anyone still using 2004 will be very pleased with 2009. The sound is very good, just like in 2004.

Thank you Paul for your encouragement, I will stoke the fire, get up steam and move on to the 2009 station and try a bit of shunting there.
Regards Jeff.

Peter...have you updated the DHR download files on your website yet to add the missing textures? I'd like to download the route for TS2009, but would rather wait until you've had a chance to ad the missing stuff.

I was not quite correct, the textures were not missing so much as they were faulty. In the total of about 2500 assets there were about 80 that needed correction, mainly due to texture faults.

I have to talk to Bill about this but what I propose to do is to make a monster CDP from TS2009 containing all the content, and pack it into an encrypted zip file using the same decrypt key as before. Bill or I will post when this is done.

There is one problem that has come to light, where a road section is a fixed length transition piece, one end overruns the vertex and the road does not join properly. This is a TR2009 bug yet to be fixed. It does not affect running of the trains.

At the moment as the SP1 is still pending, I would like to wait until after that is released before doing anything.

Cheers

Peter

Sorry...I know you want DHR questions on your own forum, but I registered earlier but haven't had seen the confirmation email yet?!

You say encrypted zip file & decrypt key...are the 12 exe files on your site encrypted? What do I need to do with them?

Maybe I'll just wait until SP1, to give you a chance to get everything updated.
