Proper Content Management

I've noticed that my hard drive is filling up. :( I need to do some housekeeping. :mop: What is the proper management of Trainz content? When I go to the "Main Menu" there is a square titled "Content Updates". Up to now, everytime I started "Trainz" I would click on this area first and updating would happen. Most of the time this would update files I have no interest in. :confused: I can click on "View Content Update Details and Download" to see what would be updated but there is no way that I can see to reject the update. Is there a practicle way I can use the Content Manager to eliminate files I don't use? How do I identify those files? Who do I say Yea :Y: or Nay :n:?

as much as i agree with ya on this but the bottom line is that you may not use this content but the content you do use may use other parts of that content you want to get rid of so to me as much as i'll love to get rid of useless content but some get used by other content

& also what about muitiplayer you might join a game that needs that loco or rolling stock that you just deleted as you didn't want it any more

Only update assets you have (local). The number of content updates is all the assets which have been updated, you may only have a fraction of that amount.

You can do a search to find all local content that is obsolete I forget the syntax but essentially when you update you end up with two copies so you can delete the older version.

Hi Jim,

I too have been doing some housekeeping as well. I cleaned up a bunch of stuff I haven't used in a decade. No kidding!

I sorted by build number for one thing, then I checked to see if the assets were listed as dependencies in a route or another asset. I did this by right clicking on the assets and choosing View Dependent Assets. If they were included, I left them. If not, well they went to the great bit-bucket. I figured that by this point if I hadn't used them in the 10 years I've had them, it was time to clean them out.

To keep up with the obsoleted items, I have created two filters in Content Manager.

The first filter is for local assets. The filter is setup as follows:

Out of date = True
Location = Local

Then second filter is for Obsolete and not Built-in. This filter is setup as follows:

Obsolete = True
Location = Local
AND NOT
Built-in = True.

I will check for updates first. I there are any updates, I will download them, and then go to the second filter and delete the old assets. Given the size of newer assets now due to the graphics enhancements, I've saved quite a bit of space removing the obsoleted items.

Could you design a filter to list which local assets (built-in or downloaded) are not being used by any local routes or sessions, and are not dependencies of any other local assets?

That is not currently possible, as I've also tinkered with the idea.

Perhaps N3V may include it in TS12 SP1 (which means you would have to upgrade to get the feature)

Thanks for the suggestion John. This is a good start. Now there are some areas or regions I will never model or need. I tried to use a filter that identified any file with a "?" in the name. There was a lot. Unfortunately, it will not let me remove the file. Any suggestions?

I too looked at this after Deane asked me. It's too bad we can't filter on these kinds of things. This would be helpful and would save a ton of time of sorting and manually looking for dependencies first before the other housekeeping.

I doubt this would make it into the up coming service pack. This would more likely be something in a whole new update or version after that.

Backup Bloat

Your problem may be caused by the backup function having too many backups and that they are excessive in size. Not unusual for backup files to be many GB (100s sometimes). Check Launcher\Options\Developer and set maximum number of backups to between one and three depending on your usage. (By default this is 7). Oldest backup files are purged daily if you close Trainz but may not do so if you run Trainz 24/7. If you are a multiplayer and have modified files they will get dumped here when you join a session. Unmodified assets are then used from original builtin or DLS, warts and all. However, I am unaware of any mechanism that automatically returns these files to active duty after multiplayer session is terminated. Other files that will appear here are copies of bad assets. You can safely delete the majority of backup files manually .

I have suggested that a 'Not in Use" filter be designed by N3V, but have had no success in getting it adopted. At least 30% of all DLS assets have never been used by a DLS or builtin route or session.

Another area that causes bloat is Obsolete - Local. Builtin obsoletes you cannot delete, but other local obsoletes can be. Here is a custom CM filter I call OBS - LOCAL:

Builtin False
Local True
Obsolete True

Some obsoletes will return if they are dependants of dependants due to a bug in obsoletion process. The rest will reside on DLS (At TS12 this equates to ~55,000 OBS- DLS).

You forgot the link I think.
Ian, I've noticed that instant load 09 which I use a lot is obsoleted by instant load 12, I take it the session will pick that up automatically.
