Hi, I have a problem with a defrag of XP which will not complete. I want to defrag to improve load up times of the game but there is an error message saying that the defrag cannot be completed because of file c:\Recycled\Dc96.dat I have googled this but could find out anything helpful.

Any ideas please??

Ta, Andy

I know it cost money. But try with Diskeeper 10 from Professional Software. I have never had problems with it, and you may have somebody to ask if it does not perform (Good luck if you have to ask to Microsoft:D ). You could download a trial version and see if it works...

Hi Andy,
Hopefully memory serves me correctly but if your hard drive is getting close to full then there might not be enough room for the whole process to run it's course. Could this be your case?

Cheers
Russell.

I also recommend Diskeeper. It can be set up to defrag anytime you want, and as often as you want. And it will defrag all drives.
I've got mine set for Automatic Defragmentation and I never know it's running.

I would recommend IOBit SmartDefrag. It is freeware in the beta version, it runs all the time, and if you get beta 3.1 then it is as sweet as a nut!

defrag problem.

hi Andy,
you need at least 11 or15% clear on hard drive,[not sure which].look right hand end top line defrag window for %figure.if under the numbers i have given ,you might have to delete some items you do not use anymore.
empty recycle bin..
all the best,,cheers Roy B.

You could also try using the disk cleanup tool, located in Start -> programs -> accessories -> system tools -> disk cleanup. Make sure that every option BUT the bottom one (the compression one) is checked. This will remove all of the windows-generated temporary files from your PC.

I have two programs from Piriforn that are free and work very well. Both have their own web sites and are found at Defraggler.com and CCleaner.com. The Defraggler program will defrag one of three choices: Defrag Drive, Defrag Folder, or Defrag File. What I like about this program it doesn't require that the HDD have lots of free space before defragging. And it is fast.
