Problem with exporting

uracco

Back to the studio!
I have a road sign in trainz Asset Creation Studio. When I try to export it aborts the export because no mesh is selected. How do I export it without the message coming up?

Do you highlight everything just before you export? if nothing is selected, Gmax cant export anything.

hope this helps:)

Make sure nothing is selected - left click on screen with selection tool or go down second column in main menu and choose 'select none.'
Go down the first column of the main menu and left click on 'export'.
Navigate to the asset's folder - in which you have already saved the mesh -, enter the name of your model and click OK.
Click on the little hammer - resource collector - click on browse, navigate to the same folder, click on use path. click on begin.
You will find that your folder contains gmax, GMW and IM files, the textures you have used, a txt file for each of the textures.
Write your config file and all should be well. If you are unsure about what to put in the config, look at an asset which you know is OK - or ask.

NB I prefer to use select none rather than to select each part of the model as suggested by privite. Alternatively you could select all (second column of menu again), and group to make one item of the whole model, then save and export.

By the way, gmax and GMW files are not needed by Trainz but if you keep them they can be useful in future for modifications etc. If you then import the asset into Trainz, they are discarded anyway - but remain in your original folder.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, i ment if you select the select button (move, scale and one other button does this too) and click and hold and drag you mouse right along everything you have made. this is a quicker & easyer way to select everything rather than selecting each one.

By the way, its easyer if you use CCP to make your model work in trainz, rather than making the config.

sorry about that

Like Ray Whiley I never select anything in the model when Exporting, although it seems not to matter if something is when saving to gmax.
I have never had a problem
Ray's explanation is a good one, try it.

Warning - if something - even only one part of a model - is selected when exporting, only that part will be saved, hence the advice to use the select none option.

To save a selection, use 'save selected' and 'export selected' and make sure this is to a new folder with an appropriate name. I often do this to save one part of a model - for example, a stone pillar used as a support for some recent work on high level/elevated stations, bridges and viaducts. This means that the same part can be used on another new model, saving a lot of time. It is even better when doing this to group the selected objects, name the group, make sure the group is selected and then use save selection etc. This means that when the item is merged with a new model, it can be moved as a complete unit. Don't forget to use resource collector when saving a selection to make sure all the necessary textures are in the new folder.

it seems not to matter if something is when saving to gmax.

I haven't tried this, preferring to err on the side of caution whether saving in GMax or exporting. However, I would mention that if you happen to have hidden parts of a model and then export it, only the parts which are not hidden will be exported. This can be a problem if you have hidden, say, a roof to work on the interior of a building and forget that it is hidden!

it must work both ways then, as i select everything, and that works too. its up to you which option you choose, although rays may be easyer:)

Yes, privite, I agree - we all have our favourite ways of doing things and if it works, then there's no problem.

I prefer my way of selecting none in case I miss something. If anyone chooses to save or export by selecting all individual parts, then I would suggest using the select all option so that nothing gets omitted - and preferably making it into a group. If there is a need to edit the model any further, it only takes one click to ungroup.

uracco - if the material is missing then either it is not in your model's folder or it does not have dimensions which are each a power of two - 2,4,8,16,32 etc. First make sure that each and every texture used is in the folder, either by copying and pasting or using resource collector in TACS/GMax - this will find each texture no matter where it is. For the second problem, check that each texture file has sides which are a power of 2 - any difference means that the texture will not be accepted. You can check which textures should be there by looking at the text files which describe them and which are automatically exported with your .im file. Another possibility is that your text file describing your texture describes it as for example a bmp when it is really a tga.

Hope you succeed!

privite - a helpful link.

uracco - if you find one of your textures is not sized correctly, there are two choices:

1 - resize it making sure you do not resize it proportionately or the error may occur again. This may well result in unacceptable blurring of the texture.

2 - copy the graphic and paste it into another of the correct proportions. There will be some waste space. You can either use this for something else (if there is room) or make sure that your uvw mapping is only to the correct area. Remember that the larger the graphic, the more individual graphics you can paste into it and it does not matter what size they are. A large, composite graphic is said to give better frame rates in Trainz than several small ones - although I believe this is less important in TS2010.

Let us know if you eventually have success.
