Portal problem

I've just added a couple of portals for a busy part of a layout.

I have trams coming out of the portal but the problem is.....they pick up speed and whizz past at an unrealistic 65 km/h and only slow down when they approach the consuming portal.......i get no contol over them.

Also when another tram is produced at random from the same portal it grinds to a halt before it gets to enters my route ?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Invisible speed signs such as those named "v.lim" can be placed on the track just outside the portal to control the speed of exiting trams. There is not much you can do about them slowing down as they enter the portal as this seems to be built into the software - perhaps put the portal entrance inside a building where they can slow down after they have disappeared inside?

I'm just trying out the basic portals that are built in to trs 2009.

Tks for that info pware......i will give that a try and see if it works.

With portals it is best to use two each end, one to produce and one to consume. A portal that does both will some times get a confict between a train entering and a train leaving. You can set the consume portal up to return the train via the produce portal so keeping each portal as one way traffic. 65km is the default speed of trainz so place speed signs a set distance away from the entrance to allow the train to clear the portals control.

Tks for the help here.....the invisible speed sign has solved that problem.

Just a couple of other things........The portal wont produce any more trams until the previous one has been consumed at the other end even though the time to produce another tram has elapsed......is this the normal way of things ?

After closing trainz then opening it again i notice the portal has to be restocked and the speed sign reset.....is this also normal ?

The help is appreciated.....it's a slow learning process.......for me anyway:)

Again. Which portal are you using and are you using a central control for portals. Please give kuids.

No, that is not normal. Most of the V.Lim speed signs are permanently fixed at a set speed (e.g. 40, 45, 50, etc) and cannot be changed, although there is a variable speed one but this should retain its user entered speed between saves. Likewise the actions of the portal should be fixed once its entered settings have been saved.

The only explanation I can think of, from a similar problem posted in the past, is that Trainz has not been correctly configured to a particular region.

In Surveyor click on the Menu (top left of screen) select Edit Route and check the Geographical Region entry (it may be just Region in TRS2009 - I don't remember). If it is empty or set to Default, then select your current country.

Yes if you open the route in surveyor. The information you put on the signals and portal are contained in the session. When you open your route do it via edit session and not edit route and it should all still be there. Tram output depends on what the portal sees. Think of the portal as a signal and a tram between the portals tells the signal the line is occupied so the portal wont produce. You need signals between the portals to break it up into sections.

I've been trying out the suggestions........when i save and reopen... my portals still need restocked and reset....the fixed speed signs are fine.

I've broken the portals up with signals....however.....more trams are still not being produced until the previous one is consumed at the other end.

The help was appreciated though.....tks.

The basic rule for using TRS 2006, 2009, 2010 and 12 is always enter Surveyor mode by choosing Edit Session (after selecting the Route click the Sessions button on the bottom right of the screen then select the session to edit) never select Edit Route.

While there are those (poor souls) who will disagree I and many others have found that it solves most problems where the settings disappear between saving and loading.

I now have the traffic working at the frequency i want.......a junction at the mouth of the portal has solved the problem.

I will take the advice and save SESSION rather than ROUTE.......thanks once again.

Top advice peter. How many times do beginners get confused with the layer thing. I must admit, It's daunting trying to work it out. Reminder. Alway open the session not the route. If you plan putting track or anything permanent that applies to ALL sessions, click the layer page button and click on routes (top). If putting locos or markers for the session, Click sessions layer (bottom).
