Portal blackout

Slave to my route
Hi everyone, I'm looking for an asset that will "blackout" a portal or tunnel entrance. Or does anyone have a technique for doing such a thing?

Dave

Are you trying to make it black so it's blocked off?

If so I can't think of any offhand, Dave but you could always clone then retexture a retaining wall to nearly pure black by putting in a single white pixel to avoid the uniform color warning/error.

If you're trying to get dark tunnels in general, there's lots of track tunnels and tunnel-tracks which are dark as well as many scenery type tunnel portals.

I would hide an iPortal or Portal inside a factory, in a dense forest of twees, behind a backdrop, or make it go underground like a subway underground downhill incline, or hide it inside a real tunnel

I had an asset back in TRS06 that went in the tunnel portal and used a series of transparent planes to add shade as things entered the tunnel. It stopped working in later versions so I don't have it now.

Dave,

I have made some portal assets which are much shorter than the built in portals - they are on the DLS they should be easier to lose in the landscape than standard portals.

<kuid:243828:1932> C+ TAP Portal Half Length
<kuid:243828:100443> C+ TAP Portal Quarter Length
<kuid:243828:100447> C+ TAP Portal Eighth Length

Give them a try and let me know what you think, they could be modified to suit

Thanks for the help, but I guess a picture is worth a thousand words :hehe:

You see how the road leads into a tunnel portal that matches the retaining wall I'm using. The road spline just ends at the tunnel entrance, but I'd like the effect of a black tunnel entrance to give the effect that the cars are entering into the city via an underground tunnel. Just curious what some of you amazing route builders would do?

John that is a good idea to find a simple wall and make it flat black with a single dot to keep TANE happy.

Dave

Only problem with that is the wall and tunnel entrance does not sit square on the baseboard and will be cocked to the side and not visually appealing.

Dave

Hm, I not familiar with such a asset. I need to take a look.

In the mean time I reskined one of Dave Snow's 50 ft. wall splines and came up with this. What do all y'all think? Does it look convincing?

That's a good alternative, Dave. I like it. :) I would put some lights in there, maybe white spots spaced evenly on the walls (if you can).

Treadway made some YARN compatible road tunnels which look nice. You might want to take a look at those, though not necessary now. Though you could place this wall in front as a tunnel entrance over the front of the road tunnel.

For tunnels that snap to the grid, there's a config.txt file setting which will unlock that. It's called snap-to-grid and can be deleted. When you delete the line, it now causes the tunnels to be free moving like a track or road, but you then lose the dig-hole, which you'll need to use separately.

I've tried not bothering with digholes and just texturing the tunnel opening in black. The only problem this causes is a 'blip' in cab view when you drive through the entrance to the tunnel. It makes it so much easier to model the terrain around the tunnel entrance. But for some reason it doesn't seem acceptable.

Hi Dave Have a look at this it might be of interest, <kuid:204652:100745> Portal Tunnel Shadow.

Thanks Steve, I tried that asset, but found it didn't quite as pleasing. I love a quote form a master route builder...

You work for weeks to make a scene look perfect only to have a train blast by in a session and you see it of only a few seconds.

For this reason I'm going for the pitch black tunnel entrance ;).
