Please help a very disappointed new classics owner...

After finding trainzeasternroutes.com, and looking between MSTS and Trainz, I recently purchased classics, figuring it was the newest version. Without reading all the reviews, I blindly ordered. Now what I've discovered is, the 'giant online community' (which you can not access without having a trainz serial number) has 90% TRS2004 and 2006 engines, locos, and routes, with no backwards compatibility because of the numerous 04 and 06 KUIDs that are not on the station.

ive entertained myself making my own route, and downloaded what is available from the DLS for classics, but is this really the route auron chose for new converts - advertising a large online database of content that they have excluded because of no longer having the dependencies.....

for instance.... i just want a conrail, or even better, B&LE SD series. it's impossible.

who would want classics besides someone who already had 2006?

If i'm just not finding what I need, please post. If i've stumbled upon the truth..someone please tell me, so I can spend my time elsewhere.

Sorry for your situation, but I'm afraid it's one that many new Classics owners will find themselves in.
Without a registered 2004 or 2006, you can't even download items for those versions from the DLS, correct?
Of course, if you could, I suppose you could install 2006 rated items without error into Classics, that's why Merscom has bundles 2006 and classics together for $20.00 retail US in stores.

Without buying 2004 or 2006, I suppose I would advise you to check out the many third party sites where you could download 2006 items, and see what you could build from there.

I've not got Classics though whenever I get the money I would get Harlem Line so this is the first I've heard of this. But if you want something that may be available on another site, it is possible to ask and someone may know where to get it. I know one freeware site that has Conrail SD35s and a payware one that has SD50s, SD60s and up plus another site with a freeware GP40-2 and payware SD45s, but you didn't mention which SD you would like.

I think Auran is aware of the issue but haven't sorted out a resolution. On the DLS though you should be able to download items for TRS2004 and TRS2006 and most of these will run under TC. I'm running them. My understanding is the content you can't get at the moment and I hope Auran will make it available via the DLS is the built in content ( the .ja files ) that comes with TRS2006.

It appears you live in the US so I assume you bought Trainz 'Railwayz'.

Railwayz comes with 2 DVDs. The first is Classics. The second is TRS2006. This is why there are 2 serials on the box (there SHOULD be 2).

You don't actually have to install the 2006 disc, just register the serial in the box with auran via the link at the top of the forum ("Serial Number").

If you bought Classics as it's own you are out of luck. :( You'll need to buy 2006. I'd recommend just going ahead and buying Railwayz.

thanks to the forum, not to auran

I did purchase classics alone, not railwayz, from the auran site.

i will probably look to get a copy of 2006 when i find it cheaply.

what a poor business model, to market with false backwards compatibility.

Well, not exactly. You're planning on buying '06 now, so they've got you for two products. Kinda like the big car companies, each year there's just a little new something to entice you. Harley-Davidson's gone that way, and you'll see more of it. Must be what they're teaching the young Turks in business school.
Ahhhh, I feel better now. Thanks.

I Might Add.....

I might add that it is worth actually getting both 2004 and 2006. I use only 2004 because, like a lot of other folks, I like to build routes and according to some of the comments on the forum 2004 is easier to build routes. Some folks build assets in 2004 and then convert them 2006 then onto TC. The bottom line is if you have all verisons you have access to all assets.

Is it worth it? Considering the "bad taste" with your first experience with Trainz. I would have to say yes because the few bucks spent on the software is nothing compared to (in my case) hundreds of hours of enjoyment I get from the game and the community.

In my opinion Auran thought they were Micro$oft where they could sell you software, you put it into a machine only to find out that you bought an "upgrade" rather than the real software. That happened to me once.:( (I won't tell you how I solved that one):hehe:

Anyway there are tens of thousands of assets on the DLS from all over the world created by very talented people who have nothing to do Auran bussiness wise. I have a fleet of Conrail locos and checked the DLS for B&LE and found two nice switchers. There are likely to be more on third party web sites.

2006 and 2004 are bound to be selling cheap. I say go for it.

The local Best Buy here was selling it for $9.99.

Like that will put a dent in a wallet. ;)

Anyway, good luck.

so i registered my classic serial number where do i get the serial number for the 2006 dvd? what a pain in the arse!

Well i bought a copy to see what it was ike after all the negative vibes on the Forums. Must say that I wasn't too impressed and especially with the lack of inter-changing. The Magicland was fine as I like trams but the Harlem was a bit less than expected. Will be sticking to my TRS06!

Welcome to the Trainz Community. Sorry about the dissappointment of TC.

If you are looking to get the most bang for you buck, check out Trainz Collection here on the Auran shops website. http://www.auran.com/auran/shop.htm

This is a pretty killer deal IMO. As someone else stated earlier in the thread, you are going to get hundreds of hours of enjoyment out this program, so for another small investment you will have the whole collection.

Shane

so am i just being dumb but the package i bought has the trainz railroad simulator in it and says disc 2. so im assuming thats the new trains. how do i get the serial number for this disc i already registered the classic in the link above thanks

chris

Disc 2 will be TRS2006 and the serial number for it will be the one that says 'Trainz Serial Code #' just below, on the inside of the front cover.

OK, now I am confused. I have Railwayz, only installed TC for now, registered the Classics Serial Code, have access to 2006 items also. There is no Trainz Serial Code in the box or manual, just Classics Serial Code. Is this something I need ask Helpdesk about?

I think you should ask Merscom... but I would go to helpdesk first.
