PEV's PM2IM changing speculars

Rename the .im suffix in the file name to .pm with Windows and then run PM2IM to change the speculars.

Scottish

In the "Options" menu of PM2IM , ensure that "Open IM Files" is ON (checked) as well as the "Adjust Speculars"

Also ensure that you have the latest version from my download page.

Thanks Peter, I've just downloaded a later version that has load IM files and change Speculars. My version had Strip textures and change Speculars. I didn't think there was a later version as Sniper had an early one and I presumed I had the latest. Just shows you shouldn't presume.

Thanks Ken.

If I recall correctly, I changed the the option menu wording after a discussion with Sniper... He's been a help to me with the constructive comments on a number of occasions.

Make sure you save the old version of PM2IM too!! (Unless Peter made some changes to the latest new version.....) The old version is the only one that can strip out the specgrey textures that break Frank's (sporbust) locos!

Barack Romney? Mitt Obama?

Who are these guys, what happened to Eisenhower?
There's my problem, not keeping up with current events. I had a version that worked, never been one to grab latest updates for anything until I have some kind of problem, so I didn't notice until someone else mentioned the interface no longer looked like the pictures. After finding that out I made an addendum to one tutorial;

http://www.trainsim.com/vbts/showthread.php?302069-My-choo-choo-is-broke!&p=1764747#post1764747

But forgot to update the other one. I was gonna procrastinate but I haven't gotten around to it yet, right now it's snowing and I haven't bought any rock salt this winter. :hehe:

Sniper when you've finished shovelling.
I'm no longer sure if I've set up the routines correctly I know PM2IM works ok when converting PMs to IMs.
but still seem to be having problems with PM2IM. In Content Manager when I right click I have the three programs: Images2TGA.bat, PM2IM.bat, PM2IM.bat, Quickshadows.bat. that are listed as Open With.
I then Open my test clone for Edit in Explorer. As I want to set the Specular I click on the PM2IM desktop shortcut and change the Specular to black and make sure that Open IM is ticked. I then click on Convert and the routine runs and says Conversion Done. I then Commit the asset, close down CM and open Surveyor to compare the effect with the original and there is none. What am I doing wrong it must be something simple.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as once I get this part of your tutorial completed I can then read the updated bit.

I'm still having problems with the new one, main thing is I'm running on an SSD F:\ drive, which might be a factor but whatever it is Open With works for Images2TGA, Mesh Viewer, QuickShadows, and attachment maker but not for PM2IM. What I have to do is launch PM2IM from the shortcut, then browse to F:\TS2010\UserData\editing\chicago metro e8a iii and open the IM file from the PM2IM menu. I also never got around to figuring out what all them error messages in AssetX are all about, but from what I've read it has some way to tell you what the specular is currently set for. Best way to trial and error speculars is to make one full white specular, set it on the tracks facing north/south, move the camera around to get the angle where the shine is obvious, then use that same session and camera angle to compare after adjusting. Might be the reason you don't see a difference is because it's already 0,0,0 black and stripping the speculars makes it 0,0,0 black but it's already 0,0,0 black. :hehe:

I'm also running on an E drive SSD and also wondered that problem I made desktop shortcuts to the eiting folders in both TS12 and TS2010 to get there quicker but I actually made 3 clones and tried black, white and grey to check that and there was no difference. I'm also using the same UP loco that you used so I could recreate the effect that you achieved.
So I am stuck.

Thanks

Ken.

I find with Windows 7 and up you need to run the utilities as Administrator.

Hope this helps.

John

Fortunately I still have XP, but from what I understand about Vista / Win7 UAC it fools you into THINKING you're making changes by allowing those changes in some kind of "virtual" folder. Except the programs aren't looking in the virtual folder, they're looking in the original folder, where the file hasn't changed because UAC is "protecting" it from your clumsy attempts to hack it by allowing you to hack a copy instead. When I'm eventually forced to "upgrade" to Win7 the first thing will be to set everything up to log in and run as admin, disable UAC, and redirect all the games to install in C:\Games or something instead of the default C:\Program Files (X86) folder - which all installations want to default to, and from what I've read it's the folder that UAC guards like a rabid junkyard dog against any changes by the user. As if hacking games wasn't already complicated enough now we gotta deal with UAC.

Thanks John & Sniper I have just finished experimenting on an old laptop running Vista and there is only one drive and I cloned three locos made one specular white one black and one red and it worked perfectly, no problems so it must be Win7 which is the main PC. I have turned off UAC I am the Administrator and I thought I was running the programs as Administrator but I obviously need to check.
Thanks for you help I was beginning to doubt my sanity.

Quick way to check, clone one and save it, paint it solid pink. Reboot the system, paint it yellow, if it still shows up pink UAC is the culprit. If you have Trainz in the C:\Program Files (X86) folder, I would suggest copying the \TS2010 (or \TS12) folder to the root of C:\ and see if that will make UAC less obnoxious.

UAC is turned off and Trainz TS12 and TS2010 both run on a separate SSD. I will check as to whether I am running as Administrator later. I am reasonably happy that I can now change the specular. I was more concerned that I hadn't set up the programs correctly.

Thanks Ken

To finish off this thread, I've just checked and the Run as Administrator on Trainz.exe, CCP.exe and Content Manager on both TS12 and TS2010 were NOT ticked - my excuse is that I've only had this PC for 5 weeks and I've only just finished loading programs on it. No other functions were affected as UAC was turned off but JohnC and Sniper were right Win7 must have been throwing away the changes. I've posted this to save others from having the same problems.
