Paint Shed

Hello;

There was a time when Paint Shed provided one with a quick and easy way to create personalized rolling stock. Then, in an effort to reduce costs to an absolute minimum, Auran, or, whomever, decided that Paint Shed wasn't worth support--normals now rule!

Realism is the name of the game. And, if one wants to create personalized locomotives, etc., one has to go through the pain of using stuff someone else made. Then comes the copyright issues, and so on, and so on.

By the way, realism is a matter of personal interpertation.

Moreover, Auran has off-loaded all the work to the user. Now, the company is nothing more than a platform provider. TS2009 and TS2010 are good examples of the benefits that this new paradyme has become.

What exactly do these platform wizards do that justifies their paycheck?

But, wait! If you have TRS2006, you can still use Paintshed, export the CDP then import that CDP into TS2009 and bingo! You have your own stuff! No need to borrow or buy things from other people! And, you can blow the cobwebs off your imagination in an easy way!

I think Auran made a lousy decision about Paint Shed. They should restore the program and give it more functionality. How hard would it be for them to add a normals ability to the utility. Costs too much? Please . . .

From my years of experience in the business world, some decisions about product lines are silly and Paint Shed, in my opinion, is one of them.

Sometimes, obessions with cutting costs kills the goose that lays the golden egg!

You disagree?

That is perfectly okay with me.

Yes, discontinued starting withTrainz Classics, if it had been made into something that could allow for reskinning everything, that would have been one thing, however, you were only allowed to reskin Auran's proprietary content, which tended to be somewhat bland by the time TRS2006 came out!

Certainly many looked down there noses at Paint Shed, understandably, but for many of us it was great. Yes, all critcisms I have read of it are valid but still, it was great. It allowed us that would never buy and learn a seperate program to easily paint rolling stock for overlooked or fictional railroads. I have done allot for the largely overlooked Western Pacific and my fictional Fiddletown and Coperopolis. Fortunately I am not a rivet counter and come at Trianz from model railroading where we are more comfotable with compromise.

Unfortunately, it seems that (at least on my system) Paint Shed will not run under Windows Vista 64-bit. Either that, or my 2006 install borked on installing some asset or other (the rest of the game works fine, though).

[edit] I really should try it out on my XP machine again.

Cheers,
CKT.
