Hi,I have trainz 2009 and I would like to make some locos for a small railway. How do I do it with paintshed? and also how do I put in in trainz?;)

You don't do it with PaintShed and you haven't got it anyway in TS2009. You need Blender or GMax to make locos - go to my website and download the tutorials. I'd recommend Blender these days.

You'll need a graphic editor like GIMP (free). Do a search here for reskinning, there are tons of threads on the subject.

There are no tutorials on how to reskin a loco, at least not that I've seen. We need a tutorial with an example of how to reskin a traincar from one livery to another. Anyone?

Holy poop. There are still new threads on Paint Shed. The little program that could!

Don't know how much of this stuff still works, but here you go . . . . Drucifer's Trainz Paint Shed Guide

Anyway, if you know how to color an old B&W photo, you can reskin anything. It's basically the same technique.

And you can also visit the link at the bottom of my post, to refresh the page just click on the word SOFTWARE to give you more options on how to reskin.

There are also various tutorials on this website to get you by, as a point of interest I use Irfanview, here is the link to the tutorial, you will need Acrobat Reader or similar to read the document.

If you also have an older version of Trainz which includes PaintShed then you can reskin there and export the results to TS2009 or TS2010.

While PaintShed doesn't satisfy the small number of expert content creators who know how to use advanced programs such as Blender and gmax, it's ideal for the majority of Trainz users who don't and never will get involved with anything more complicated.

Paintshed gave you a mesh that you applied a basic texture file to or in other words its a simple reskin. On some of my Paintshed models I actually then modified the Paintshed texture file to get a better result. A simple reskin can give better results than Paintshed ever could plus you have a much wider variety of meshes to work with.

I'm unclear why you are saying you'd need to use Blender or GMAX to do an advanced reskin or am I missing something?

Thanks

I'm not disputing that the advanced programs give better results, but they are definitely not simple. They need expert knowledge that most people don't have and are not prepared to put months of effort into obtaining.

On the other hand PaintShed is a fun thing that is fairly readily accessible to most users. Removing it has destroyed both the enjoyment it gave and also the elementary introduction to the world of 3D modelling that it provided.

There might be a good case for prohibiting further PaintShed creations from being uploaded to DLS though, or vetting them for quality.

How do you export (I have UTC with Paintshed, plus TRS2006). I created a couple of simple items in Paintshed, but can only find them within the program. I tried numerous searches the old-fashioned Windows ways and could not find where Paintshed saved these.

I assume if we can find them, we simply copy or cut and paste into the other Trainz directory.

In TRS2004 they are held in kuid folders. Sorry, I don't know how UTC stores assets.

In TRS2006 and later there are no kuid folders. Instead assets are stored in a database and can only be manipulated using the CMP program. I think CMP has an import facility.

If its TRS2006 then just clone the item and open for edit it explorer. TS2010 is much more robust for this sort of thing.

You can use paint.net to do simple reskins free and fairly simple to use. My favourite would be Paintshop pro version XI available for $15 on ebay in the US. You can also get into GIMP a more powerful but free program.
