One difference between passenger and freight cars is?

Ed: Thanks for sharing this information..Even Though it was a tough one..This young man is very lucky to be alive..

I dunno.

I mean, you could be sitting on the Regional with the tray open for your laptop and decide to reach for the TravelMall in the pouch in the back of the seat in front when that guy in the seat in front tries to recline all the way back, severing your forearm in a rather nasty bloody mess that Amtrak later sends you a bill for the cleanup and revenue lost from keeping the car out of service while cleanup took place plus shipping to Beach Grove for deep cleaning and partial rebuild to get rid of that nasty severed arm smell.

Pretty sure your legs are safe, though. There's a fair amount of legroom in those cars.

I love how indecisive the news can be....was he inbetween, on, in or under the car....was it a load shift or wreck....lol almost like the don't know what the heck they are talking about...hmmmmm

I feel sorry for the poor dog, I have no sympathy for the stupid bloke, he should have known better, but I do feel for the dog, who did not know what was right from wrong.

That's a good point Joe. I imagine the young man shed quite a few tears during his ordeal, and not all of them due to the pain.:(

The real messed up thing about all this is that there is propably someone right now in the haspital room trying to convice him to sue the railroad for not having the load secured from movement. Thats how it works in the great old US of A lol

Amtrak jokes are probably a bit out of place, though I can understand how Roorocz couldn't resist, and I'm sure many have occurred to those of us who have had the "pleasure" of riding the system. What amazes me is the way some people find it so difficult to have some degree of respect for things that are heavier and harder than they are, and, therefore, likely to do serious damage if they start moving around a shared confined space.

I agree, but at the same time, you can understand a person thinking it would not move either. People that haven't driven trucks or trains or airplanes or ships laden with cargo just assume that it is secured, and won't shift in transit. The rest of us know better.

This is a terrible story. What's a teenager doing riding the railroads with his dog as a 'transient'? How did that happen? I don't believe we have this in the UK (despite George Osborne's best efforts) thank God.

Paul

It seems ironic that if someone in the Middle East so much as farts loudly the USA goes into maximum security alert yet, seemingly, lack of security on their rail system allows anyone to jump on to a freight train and ride to where ever.

This story is a tragedy.

Rob.

Hi Everybody.
I think the big difference between the UK and the US regarding this tragedy will be that it is much more difficult to get near any freight cars standing in sidings in the UK as security is much tighter. In the UK a railway siding would be classed as a workplace and therefore subject to workplace safety regulations. In that respect it would not good enough for any workplace to just post signs stating that individuals should not board or travel in or on the freight carriers. you have two be seen to actually enforce the rule or regulation on that sign.

Therefore, as well as the signage you also get much stricter security and thereby enforcement of the regulations. There have been in recent times several major court rulings that have imposed very high penalties on companies that have been found to not enforce workplace regulations and signage and have brought about the foregoing.

Is it really that easy to jump on to a freight train in the US?

Is it beyond the realms of fantasy that a terrorist could plant a device in a freight train car and time it to explode in a built up area?

Perhaps someone from the USA could answer that question.
