On the subject of bumping old threads...(suggestion)

So, recently there has been a number of age-old project threads being dug up from the dead. This is usually due to the member being fairly new and, needless to say, is curious about said project and wants to know where to get it. However, the method of bumping the thread for "updates" usually brings up false hope for other members who have the notion that the project has been revived and will be released soon - only to find that it was only somebody inquiring about the project because, as stated before, they weren't around when the project was active and want to know if it was ever finished or not. While some may argue that this is a good way to re-ignite the spark of interest in the creator, it usually ends in the annoyance and frustration of the other members.

However, I offer a simple suggestion for all of this. Possibly an addition to the CoC.

If a user wants to inquire about a project that is "x" amount of years old/ past page number "x," instead of bumping the thread and causing all of this ruckus, they should just PM the creator of the project as to whether they are still working on it. This is still a good way to re-ignite interest in the project, and if not, it still avoids creating a fuss about what is considered "vaporware."

This is just my 2 cents. Hopefully it will be taken into consideration.

Thanks,
Aaron.

Why should bumping an old thread be: "causing all of this ruckus".
Everyone from the peanut gallery is freeking out, and blithering their personal sentiments, like a self appointed forum police: "Hey You...Don't do this"..."I Said...Don't do that"...

If an old thread gets bumped...big deal...read it and forget it...and it will eventually go away, back to page #136 eventually.

All your idjiotic bumping, and bumping, and bumping, of the bumped thead, with your sarcasim, personal feelings, and mutterings from the peanut gallery, by adding idiotic comments about how "you hate bumped threads"...this is getting very old, and you are bumping it so much further, making the thread go on, and on, and on, so much further, quibling and arguing amongst each other, about something stupid, that could have been left alone, and simply ignored....Now if you had simply read it, and ignored the silly bumped thread, it would go away.

If you don't like it...don't read it. If you simply let it go...it will go away.

The forums have been a bunch of whining, snivling, wanna-be, forum cops, lately..."don't do this"..."don't do that"...the immaturity here lately...is enough to make one leave the Forum completely, and give up on Trainz community completely !

And if you are worried about wasting of bandwidth...
By YOU repeatedly posting: "DohhOhhhh...Teacher, Teacher...LOOK...He did it again"..."Oh How I Hate Old Bumped Threads"...your never ending comments, and personal feelings, are in fact a waste of bandwidth.

Stop whining about it.

You'll get over it.

It'll be OK

Old bumped threads will fade away if you don't comment on it, and don't post dozens of pointless complaints

These words pretty well sum it up!

...annoyance and frustration of the other members...
These words pretty well sum up how I feel about people that complain all the time like you! Granted the reader should look at the last post date to see if it is active, but how many times in a day do you see new threads pop up with questions that have already been answered in another thread maybe just a few days before. Al this does is congest the forum with needless redundancy. Don't you feel it good that they acually tried a search for the subject first, instead of just rattling off as I just mentioned! Old thread have alot of good information in them, and on that point, what information is there here in your new thread? (Which is really a copy of many before, if you have just read a little!)

There is no need for extra rules at all.

The problem lies with those who "frown upon", "have false expectations", "are irritated by", "makes me angry". These members need to sort out there own easily inflamable online emotions and try to deal with their own set of unfounded expectations towards a "bumped" topic. Or do you always think you have already won the lottery when a advertisement for a sweepstake falls on your doormat without paying for the ticket yet?

There is no single legitimate reason to assault, name calling, frowning, getting irritated, angry et cetera when somebody bumps an older topic. It DOESN'T matter WHY somebody bumps a topic, because the reason for that person is just as legitimate as YOUR reason not to want it having bumped.

To the "Self-Appointed-Forum-Police-Against-Bumping-Older-Topics" (SAFPABOT) I can only say: Grow Up! There is NO problem but the one in your head.

@cascaderailroad & American_Connections - why are you pointing fingers at me? I never once said that I personally was the one who was tired of old threads (I could care less either way), I was only trying to find middle ground between the two groups and minimize conflict.

However, I can see that my effort wasn't needed. This thread may now be locked.

Unless the thread gets too many pages, if the subject is relevant to an old thread, then I see no problem with bumping an "old" thread. Besides, they took the effort to find an older thread that maybe relevant.

And besides at what time would a thread be considered old?

Perhaps are you old too, and you should not being bumped:wave: But don't forget that you've been a newbee! And we are all newbees in anything.

It's a catch 22. We tell noobs to use the search feature, which is good, then the search turns up threads from 1982. I'm not really too bothered by it aside from the few that only seem to bring up very old threads exclusively. True, I don't have to read them. I do get tired of wannabe bullies being very rude to noobs. I guess I'm kind of in the middle. Sometimes old threads are relevant and do feature content that is available, and if it's not on the DLS, they might want to know where to find it. I have tons of Trainz sites in my favorites, but someone new to this doesn't know about all of these. Also, how hard is it to politely say "this person is no longer active", or "this has been confirmed as vaporware" and then let the thread die after that, without someone jumping the gun and calling them stupid? These noobs might be valuable to us one day. Where do new content creators come from? I have seen people start learning to build things and fly right past me and become great builders.

There used to be such a rule? On this forum? News to me, but then I have only been on the forum since 2002.:o

Why should "bumping" be an issue?

#8 it was, rather surprised it still not in the COC
surpose number 12 could be imposed a bit more

Think the biggest problem is that apart from AJ all the other fourm mods are gone MIA

Rules

Isn't there a rule about multiple posts too, I know sometimes it's not the fault of the poster. But on the subject of threads, we need a rule about posting the same thread more than one time. I see here four of the same thread, across various topics, and this is not the first time. This is much worse than any older thread coming back into view! Even if the original poster is gone, if the question can be answered through the post, is better to view it than make a new replication of the same thing.

We do have a good Code of Conduct it seems that A) nobody is reading it and B) no one is policing it.

People can post in many areas as nobody is telling them not to or closing down the extra threads.
