On Bumping Old Threads. (Call for Clarification.)

I've never understood why people get so uptight at old threads being bumped.
I've seen a few people recently complaining about it, but how does it affect their lives?

Smiley.

About sums it up, perfectly!! There a more important things in life to worry about... and there are also countless other things to enjoy.

People should quit shagging their hard drives and get a life.

I have no objections to old threads being bumped as i said in another thread, it some times kicks the old brains cells into gear about solutions that where forgotten. I have some times had a problem my self and a recently bump thread gave me the answer. When some of the rude replies say use the search button, this often leads to an old thread being bumped. Then the cycle starts again about bumping old threads. Some times newbies cant win. I say give them a chance and they will learn.

I like old threads. I have learnt lots looking at old post. Sometimes I had to go back to one of my old post to look for something.

I don't like bumping if it was an irrelevant post. (Spam, flaming, etc.) But I'm perfectly fine if the bump was relevant, such as adding something useful to the thread such as a screenshot if it's a screenshots thread, or answering a question, and so on and so forth. If you answer to a question that's been answered a million times before the bump, that's another example of an irrelevant post. But, as I stated above, if the question was never answered in the entire thread no matter how many pages, then it's relevant to post the answer. Bumping does get on everyone's nerves, and as AJ stated, if you never read the last post date and made an irrelevant post, then you're likely to get shouted at. We've all bumped a thread at least once, no matter what forum it was on. The best thing to do after an irrelevant bump is to just ignore it and say no more, letting it go back into the deep depths of the forum. If it was relevant, then keep posting. Those are just some of my recommendations, you don't need to agree with them, but seriously, why should we be getting all hyped up over a simple bump? It's not the end of the world, is it?

Do we really need a clarification in the bumping of threads? There is nothing in the Code of Conduct that prohibits it so, I would say that is about as clear as it needs to be.

Here is what happens. You see a thread and not look at the date last posted. Sounds interesting but then you get dissed for bumping but you had no clue it was a bump when you posted. I know I have done that. I suspect many others have also.

What gives with all the tension and anger?

Chill because this can be a peaceful place to pursue your love of trains. )

Cheers

AJ

There is nothing wrong with bumping it with something useful. Such as, if it is a thread about a particular railroad, posting pics of your stuff related to the railroad, or information pertaining to the railroad.

But when people bump very old threads either A) Demanding content, B)Asking where vaporware is when two posts above him, the creator cancelled the project or C) posting crap that has nothing to do with the topic at hand or is incomprehensible.

I think all the tension and anger should be dropped, and excluded from the forums.

This forum is a great place to talk about, conquer technical problems, and enjoy reading new (or bumped threads) about Trainz.

Chill, says it all

I have bumped old threads in the past and been told don't do it as it is not right.

However, the main reason I bumped the old thread's was to help someone else out who was looking for track maintenance equipement, and on another thread about how to reskin rolling stock, as I was constantly being hounded "how do you reskin" due to my advert at the bottom of my post, I don't mind one or two asking, but when a lot of members ask, and you get back from them "I've been to the website, I downloaded what you said, but I'm still lost" then I believe it's only fair to help them out. These are the only reasons why I have bumped old threads in the past.

Just my 2pence worth...

Couldn't have said it any better myself. If it's useful, let it slide. If it's mindless garbage, then just let the thread be dead again till someone else bumps it.

It would appear as though you can't win either way. I have seen very sharp replies in new threads where a question is posed which has already been answered in an older thread, and I have seen users 'told off' for bumping old threads:confused:
It seems as though you are damned if you do and damned if you don't!

That said though, it is impossible to please all of the people all of the time, but then thats whats makes us all different, however patience is a virtue and some people should show more of it

Well I believed the purpose of the Forums was to discuss... and encourage discussion. However, if someone can correct my possibly misdirected way of thinking, please be at liberty to do so.

PS I hope haven't violated any precious individual's posting ethics and standards by further bumping this thread.

That's the impression that I've been under, for a number of years. I'm an admin on a forum with 6300+ members. I guess we have been doing it wrong for all of these years.
