I have several trains on my layout that I want to run at different times, but this sim won't let me. No matter whether I use DCC or my Raildriver, I go to Driver, and it fixates on my UP Aerotrain. I try to run another train, and the controls disappear. I can't drive the train. Why? What's the use of creating a session if you're going to be limited to one operable train. I want to run a short freight from my yard to a customer who has his own small yard. But I can't. So what do I have to do, delete the Aerotrain and all the others, and then run this freight to the customer, back his cars into his yard, go back to surveyor, delete that engine, put the customers model 40 on the tracks, go back to driver, spot the cars, go back to surveyor, delete the model 40, put a locomotive on the freight and take off to the next and repeat that whole process? I may be looking into another train sim if that's the case. But, I have faith in you guys. I'll bet somebody here knows the answser and how to run all my trains in the same session. So I'll check back later. TIA

Have you assigned any AI commands to the other trains?

Also check that the trains have had drivers assigned in the 'driver setup' rule in Surveyor. In TS12, it is a requirement for the consist to have a 'driver' to be able to actually drive the train.

At least on my computer it does. I'll check on assigning drivers. I think I know how, if not, I'll be back. Thanks for the input.

Okay, so I don't know how to do it. I think I almost had it, but didn't. I made a test table and put all my American locos on it, and none of them had drivers. Those that had windows I could see into, that is. Then I got a wild idea. I saved it, went into driver, and lo and behold, most of the locos had drivers. But a lot didn't, and wouldn't you know it, those were the ones I wanted to drive. So, how do I permantly assign a driver to each of these locos? And please use words of one syllable or less.

From reading this thread I am getting the impression that there is some confusion over what different posters mean by "drivers".

To me a driver is simply a name assigned to a particular locomotive in the driver command list which is set up in the session rules. Whether someone, a graphic icon of a person, actually appears seated or standing inside the locomotive cabin is totally unimportant to me - it does not affect the operation of the loco, only the aesthetics (sorry that was more than one syllable).

To the original poster, and tell me if I have got this wrong, a driver is the graphic icon that appears inside the loco cabin. Whether that loco has any commands to follow in the driver command list is unimportant.

As far as I know, for a graphic icon driver to appear in a loco cabin the designer of that loco asset must have assigned an attachment point (for the graphic icon to attach itself to) for this to occur. Not all locos have this feature and while it adds to the realism of the sim, it is not important for its operation.

Am I hot, cold or just barking up the wrong tree with this?

But isn't that the problem you are having ?
Maybe if you gave them AI commands, you could drive them.

Hi Cactushead (cactus are those spikey things right?). Here is the "quick 'n' dirty".

1. Remember you are dealing with a computer model and not an OO/HO etc. model. This means that whether the loco crew are visible is totally irrelevant in everything except they look nice. Assigning drivers is program configuration requirement.

2. If you want to drive your locos yourself in "simple mode" (aka DCC), then all you need to do is use the W (FWD), X (REV) and S (BRAKE) keys.

3. If you want a "real" hands-on experience, then you go in cab and try to fathom out the controls.

4. If you want an AI experience wherein you tell the train what to do and it goes off and dutifully does it (a perfect partner eh????), then you must have a driver assigned to the loco. It really must believe it has a crew even if you cannot see one.

Sorry about the all the syllables but c'mon ....... that's the English Language.

I've off tan wonder why some locos get drivers assigned to them and other don't when you place them on the tracks.? I hate going into driver and fining a loco without a driver then i have to search for one or go out of driver and assign a driver to that loco.

From what I have seen if a session already has drivers assigned in Surveyor - Driver Setup then no more drivers are added to the list when you add more locomotives and subsequently go into drive mode. If Driver Setup has not been edited then extra drivers are automatically assigned when additional locomotives are added when you go into drive mode.
