Obsolete - what does that mean?

When an asset is marked as "obsolete" in the CM, does that only mean that the author has removed it from DLS?
Is there also an update to this asset and how do I find that in that case?

My question is raised since I see that all trees that I had downloaded from jankvis that started with "jvc~" now is obsoleted. Previous, jvc~ meant that it was a real 3D tree that worked in native mode as I have understood jankvis. Does this mean that there is no more 3d trees from jvc?

It means a newer version with a higher KUID, or kuid 2 has been added to the DLS. Right click on obsolete items and choose "view asset versions". If there is an update on the DLS you will be able to download it.

It means new versions are available. You should be able to download the new versions from the 'Content Updates' menu.

But...

Does this mean that when I have downloaded updated content that it automatically replaces obsolete kuids in the game or have I to do it manually?
Greatnorthern.

There is a difference between content with updates available, and content that is obsolete.

Update Available (Out of Date): There is a newer version on the DLS.
Obsolete (Newer version already installed): There is a newer version already installed on your machine, and Trainz will use the newer version unless a config file specifically requests an obsolete version in it's kuid-table.

No I think your wrong there trainz will always use the new version, even if the config calls the older one- thats how it works - save rewriting the config each time an update assest comes out.

Obsolete tables are a thing of the past in the newer version of trainz.

Fair enough - I have found a few instances previously though, where obsolete versions are listed as dependencies for assets.

As I understand it, if you specifically use a kuid2 in the config for, say, an enginespec, interior, or whatever, then trainz will insist on using that version, and this goes for the dependency list too.

When a creator isn't using CCP, there is a great temptation to blindly copy and paste the kuids from within CM, which will tend to result in kuid2's being specified in the config if an asset has already gained multiple versions, the correct action, of course, is to correct any kuid2 to a plain kuid when pasting asset kuids into a config.

Am I correct?

if obsolete, you ALREADY have the newer version and can DELETE this item?

if update - you need to download the newer version to render the one you have already as obsolete?

to update - do you just pull the asset across to download helper in Content Manager and Content Manager will do the rest?

if so, this explains why I still have obsolete stuff when I thought I was updating them by sending them to download helper.

Yes, obsolete content (as I stated above) is an older version of a piece of content where you already have a newer version installed.

I would advise caution in removing it, in case any assets are specifically using that particular version.
