Norfolk Southern in Minneapolis, MN?

Hey, guys!

I have been in the dark for a LONG time about this, but I'll let you guys take a gander at this and see what you think.

If you were to goto Google Maps, or Google Earth, and type in "Norfolk Southern" in the search box, and were to hit enter, it would bring you to Minneapolis, MN on Viking Drive near what appears to be a gas station. However, it is labeled 'Norfolk Southern', and if you were to find it on Google Maps it would be categorized as a Railroad Company.

Now, if you were to goto NS's website (www.nscorp.com), there is no info on this place, what-so-ever. What I'm wondering is that, is NS going to build a building here, maybe like one they have in Atlanta, Georgia? Could it be a staging area, or possibly a new headquarters? Maybe it could be something different? I have been trying to find out what this mean't for a while, I just want you guys to take a look at it, see what you guys think of this. I think it's strange.

However, recently NS made an agreement with CP that stretches their Intermodal network up to Minneapolis, allowing NS to use CP's trackage, but that doesn't explain the location at Viking Drive.

Best regards,

Carter

Must be some odd location near you. I copy Norfolk Southern and paste it into Google maps, I get a location in Jersey City.

Actually I copy and paste, I first get a drop down box with choices such as Central Park (NYC), Jersey City (NJ) and Union (NJ). If I type CSX, I get Oak Point Yard (Bronx), a couple in Kearny (NJ) and one in North Bergen (NJ).

Google must simply try to find the best match nearby. Maybe where yours comes up is a NS rail line most likely (though the Central Park location is odd, NS has nothing there).

Mapquest seems to do the same though with no choice in drop down box and CSX sends me to Philadelphia (PA).

But doesn't NS have to sacrifice money to CP Rail to run trains over their routes? And on top of that a percentage of revenue they make on the trains that travel down them need to be paid as well? Maybe I've played too much Railroad Tycoon.

That is the first I've heard of that but it could be possible. CP is still running their containers out of Shoreham but they just aren't on 182/183 anymore. Hunter cut those and added the traffic to 290/291. It is possible the CP just might start adding a NS block of freight instead of just Chicago IM to make a smoother transition in Chicago.

Google Earth brings me to 1200 Peachtree Street Northeast, Atlanta, GA 30309, when I type Norfolk Southern in the search box.

Thanks for your replies,

Maybe it's just some wierd coincidence then. I found this out a while ago when I was on Google Earth and typed in "Norfolk Southern" in the search box, and it brought me to Minneapolis, MN. I've been scratching my head ever since. So maybe if it doesn't work for you guys, then maybe Google is playing tricks on us, who knows.

@Kris94, I believe the agreement was that if NS got to run freight on CP's line, CP could run freight on NS's line, I don't really know exactly what there agreements were, hopefully we will find out sooner or later. In order for trains from railroads that are on other railroad's trackage, I believe an agreement must be made. I think the most common agreement is that if one railroad uses the trackage of another railroad, then the railroad whos trackage is being used get's to run trains on other railroads trackage, confusing right? Another is where one railroad pays the railroad to use their trackage.

Could it be that NS has a sales office in Minneapolis? In Google Maps I find that they sometimes put you in the nearby locale but not necessarily the right location.

Sorry to bump with a semi-OT question, but does this mean they will no longer be running the Triple-Crown trains on the UP Milwaukee Sub?
