Norfolk Southern bridge fire on 12/01/2010

I didn't know!

First off. I am not targeting you at all. I was just pointing out something that needed to be addressed. No need to take such offense to it.

Forum rules or not. Being more worried about a locomotive than a human beings life is appalling. You typed it so don't blame me. I didn't fabricate anything.

I do hope that something like this never happens!

How would you like it if your dad was killed at work and you saw a posting on the internet about someone being upset because a piece of equipment he was using was broken in total disregard that your father became diciest?

I was just saying you should be more respectful.

Cry to the mods buddy. Go right ahead.

Have a great day,

-Steve

okay, I was being too harsh, sorry about that , I did not know and yes I would be sad if that happened to me,and your right eqiupment holds no value over life,I 'll be more respectful next time!:(

1)You are offended about what I post but of course the fact that you deeply offended doesn't mean anything.

My sentiments exactly man.

Thank you UP5521. That is all I could ask for. You have gained my respect back for what it's worth to you.

Sorry everyone... Back on topic now.

no problem, I was wrong for that and I think I need some time to clear up my head, anyhow do you know what caused the fire that resulted into this tragic incident?:(

well, this accident clearly shows that bad things happen when property is placed over life, which is a big mistake that results in either death and/or injuries!:(

I recieved today a "story" with photos making the rounds of email claimng to show a loaded coal train that had a "hot box". The train stopped with the failed axle on a simular sized trestle, igniting the trestle. The engineer requested permision to move the train off the trestle but permission was refused, acording to the story, so the trestle, entire train and load of coal was lost.
From the photos it could be the same incident.

No...

 Thanks for the mention Super, but that was a different accident in another location, previously.

This one rounded a curve & observed fire on the trestle. In a failed attempt to stop ahead of the bridge, they stopped on top of the fire(how many times have you done that in Trainz...over-estimated your stopping ability?).

They had no idea of the condition of the bridge & by rules were forced to take action...

I have yet to read of the cause of the fire.:(

well,I hope this never happens again, alot of families lost their loved ones in this tragic accident and all some people think about is the equipment, I mean that can be repaired but lives cannot!:(

The cause of the fire is believed to be slag from welding igniting the plastic composite material. A train before it fanned the flames.

Sounds true...

 I read over at jreb.com forums that there is a subtle animosity going around in the local area there between train crews & track & signal crews because the area is track warrant controlled, or dark territory. It's on everybody's minds & everyone knows it but no one is talking about it openly. Train crews depend on T&S crews for their saftey.

Maybe now, better oversight of the line(maybe signals?) may occur. It's an unfortunate day for both divisions.

I hate to see collisions because my family has been around transportation all my life & I know bread-winners are involved.

The locomotives are parked, however they shrunk-wrapped them in black plastic, then, white plastic(I guess we'll see them on the Internet this week).

Heavy metal parts show signs of melting to give you an idea of the temperatures involved.

I thought the crew had a better chance if they ran the bridge, but E-braking & plastic ties made that all but impossible.

But yes, the company would require stopping immediately.

Braking operating rules prior to a fatal catastrophic collision on the NS can prevent your widow from receiving your pension-fund until your retirement age...

I agree because as far as i'm concerned, something needs to be done in order to prevent fatal accidents like this one and others in the future!:(

Dear God, that's terrible. :(

My hopes are that the conductor did not die in vain. I hope some changes will arise from this.

Those locomotives are nothing more but to show what a fire can do.

I hope the family is doing better now.

Sincerely,
Joshua

There are some interesting details looking at those locomotives.

1.) The glass is gone. I doubt it melted, but the sheer heat probably shattered it.

2.) Handrails are missing. Likely compromised in the fire. (note not melted, just broken.)

3.) Some paint does remain.

4.) Most of the thinner metals have compromised/oxidized. (note: metal doesn't always "melt" in a fire. Sometimes it oxidizes, or basically rusts away really quickly)

5.) Batteries have exploded. (Damage visible to Battery Boxes)

6.) There is a slight warping visible to the frames
