Thanks for taking this post,

I have been a pc gamer and computer builder from the beginning. I never was into train sims but I have played many aircraft simulation games. Recently I built a new computer for my uncle. He is a 70 year old retired GM engineer who worked for their electromotive division. He mainly uses his computer for checking email and reading the news, but I put a cheap graphics card in it anyway.

I was wondering if this game would be fun to install on his new computer. Is it overly complicated? Does it run well on Vista? Is there an install guide for all the updates and recommended mods?

PC Details

2.6ghz E6750 proc, 4 gigs ram, ATI Radeon 3650 graphics card with 512vram, Windows Vista OS.

Thanks very much for any replies.

Hello

Yes it does run on windows vista and cmp needs vista permissions to run and install Trainz as an administrator on windows vista: http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=22293

What version of Trainz are you running?

Ahsan:)

It should run fine.

If you do decide to install it, then make sure that you allow trainz to take as much RAM as possible. This will speed up loading of routes etc no end. To do this, add the following line into trainzoptions.txt, which can be found in the TRS2006 folder, at this (default) location (once installed): C:\Program Files\Auran\TRS2006\

Line to add:
-ResourceMemory=**** (something like 2046, for 4GB of RAM)

You might to have a look at the Trainz wikibook to get some idea of what the program offers, especially the "Things You Can Do In Trainz" section.

When installed, the built-in material alone will provide many hours of challenging fun. This includes layouts, rolling stock, driving tutorials and activities.

If he wants to go further, then it's possible to download and install a huge range of additional material both from this web site and from fan sites (but finding all the necessary bits to make these things work can be difficult and frustrating), and it's also possible to create things yourself. Creating simple layouts is easy but real quality layouts involve a huge effort, of course. Creating activities and especially rolling stock, buildings, etc is highly advanced. But there's no need to get involved with any of the advanced aspects unless you wish to.
