New Motherboard Suggestions

Hi to all ,
I have little experience with a major task, such as changing a motherboard and I was hopeing that someone could tell me what one I shoud buy ....
I currently have a K7S41GX Motherboard, and I wanted to know what other trainz users thought of it ....
My main consern is that I have 1.5Gb of RAM and my motherboard can only accept DDR RAM.
Will having a Motherboard that can accept the higher speeds, significantly inprove my performance ???

My Processor is an AMD Duron @ 1800Mhz
My Graphics Card is ...
Model : Radeon X1650 Series
Bus Type : AGP
Total Memory : 512 MB
I would like a Motherbord that would be compatible with these things and it would need to cost less than £150.
The More RAM Slots the better.
PCI slots , can still be useful to me.
AGP slot for my graphics card.
If possibe a PCI-E Slot would help for future upgrades.

THANK YOU,
Dj PIP

P.S : If My Mercury 300W Power supply is not compatible , it needs changing anyway to a 450W+ Model !

Well that's a socket A motherboard.
Hate to say this but there is no motherboard really that's any sort of upgrade. I'm not sure what's exactly available in the UK, but I can say that an upgrade wouldn't get any significant performance increase.

Basically you're better off waiting/saving for a new computer.
(I am of course assuming you're looking for better performance not just a needed replacement if the motherboard died)

ah but then he needs DDR2 RAM, also he can't reuse the video card and the 6100's don't handle Trainz all that well.

I'm unclear what you are trying to do. You could up the memory to 2 gigs which is what most people run. The motherboard doesn't run dual channel, Socket A I think is a little dated 32 bit cpus only so you can't upgrade to one of the new processors, performance wise a new motherboard alone won't get you very far.

Probably the best you could do is max the memory to 2 gigs, and drop in a faster video card such as a 1950 replacing the power supply. My suggestion might be save up and buy a new system.

On the value side on ebuyer.com I might go ASUS M2NPV-VM NF430 Socket AM2 PCI-E DDR2 SATA uATX, with a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (2.5GHz) Socket AM2 Energy Efficient L2 1MB (2x512KB) Cache Retail Boxed Processor and 2 gigs of Kingston 1GB DDR2 667MHz / PC2-5300 MEMORY CL5 1.8V NON ECC UNBUFFERED. That would bring you up to 160 quid and you would be using onboard video to get in the price range. Not a good solution for Trainz, but it would allow you to add a video card later and end up with a reasonable system. Performance wise because of the on board graphics it's probably about the same as you have today. Personally I'd hold off for the moment whilst the new graphics cards come out and the new intel processors came out early next year. They probably aren't in your price range but they should help other prices drop nicely.

Thanks

Okay then ....

How can I tell what CPU's are compatible with my current motherboard ...

Would it be better to go for a Intel Quad Core / AMD X2 Model ....

Cheers

Both AMD and Intel have new ones coming out. Wait until after Xmas when the dust has settled.

Currently Intel holds the high end but AMD are much stronger in the mid range.
