New GB rail line - a dream?

In the media great play has been made of simulating a proposed brand new passenger line from London with a divide to Glasgow and Eidnburgh. With 200MPH trains Machester could be reached from London in 45 minutes and glasgow just several mintes over 2 hours! The estimate is billlions of course as these lines would be seperate from the existing ones and more frequent. The planners see it as something after the present credit crunch. However whether it will ever happen is another question?!

Details of Network Rail's New Lines Programme can be found at: http://www.networkrail.co.uk/aspx/5892.aspx

This is the proposed network with new journey times from London:

Of course, £34 billion is a lot of money - about half as much as the Government gave to the banks last October! :hehe:

it will be no fun!

if its not steam its not fun whats the point in listing to the buzz of wasted electricity?

Hope it's not a dream - only 20+ years behind the rest of Europe, Japan, Korea, China etc. At this rate Morrocco, Argentina and the UAE will be first (not to mention the Americans).

Of course, now I've moved to the one country that will probably trail even the UK and USA in high-speed rail development...

'Fun' is not the point. The point is getting from London the Scotland in under 3 1/2 hours. You want Steam, go to a preserved railway, but for the main line, high-speed electric trains are the way to go.

Welcome to the forums, by the way.

It's one o fthe pipe dreams that litter politics ...
It will never happen...
Why?
Folk will say GB is too small , why do you need to get to glasgow in 3 hrs? etc...
the fact the same folk fly , to try and get theer evan fast is just nimby talk ....

I used to live in aberdeen ( north scotland ) it took 4 hrs by plane ( cheack in etc.. ) and 14 hrs by train ... !!!!!!!!!!! ( from Portsmouth )

Hmm,

Journey time :-

Home to railway station = 15 minutes (walking)

time to London (Waterloo) = 70 minutes.

Time fighting around the tube to "London Central" = 20 minutes (based on Waterloo to Euston).

Time to Edinburgh 129 minutes

Total 234 minutes - about 4 hours.

Alternatively.
Home station to Heathrow (new proposed link) about 30 minutes.
Wait 90 minutes for boarding gate to open
Flight time 55 minutes
bus to Edinburgh about 15 minutes

215 minutes (adding in walking time to station) - about 3 3/4 hours.

Except for the fighting around the tube, there's not much difference, except that the flight is cheaper...

There are good reasons to get out of Glasgow in three hours. :hehe:
