Need help with setup of Trainz 12

Just did the digital download a couple of days ago. Get almost to the end of extracting files and got an error message, something about a bad or missing file. I skipped it and finished the install. The only thing that seems to be missing is the map files for the tutorials, which make the the sim impossible to figure out without having gone through them. I can build a train in surveyor mode, but can't get the thing on the track to actually drive it. This sim is the farthest thing from intuitive that I've ever seen. I downloaded everything to a new, dedicated folder and ran the install from there. I'm running Windows 8 if that makes a difference. Thanks.
Steve

You'll need to register your serial number using the link above. That may help things somewhat. From where did you download Trainz?

Sorry, I meant I can build it on the track in surveyor mode, but when I go back to Routes, I can't get the train on the tracks. Some routes I can get a consist of cars to appear, but they just slowly roll down the grade with no loco to attach them to.

Steve,

Please register your serial number.

Login to the Planet Auran using the same username and password you used to login to the forums here.
Choose Serial Number.
Choose product from the list.
Put in your CD-Key.

This will post the product on the track list next to your name, and will show you are a legit user. We offer little if any support for non-registered users. You may be a legit user, but we do not know that.

Now for your question.

In Trainz choose your route in the route list.
Choose Session on right.
Create a session.
Place your trains on the track including a locomotive.
Save the session.
Close the Surveyor. Yes it is the same but in Session mode.
Choose Drive session on right corner.
Choose your control type.
Climb into the loco, and go for a drive.

Hi Steve,

Welcome to Trainz, possibly the least intuitive sim ever.
Have you tried the link in sniper's post?
Unfortunately your post is confusing to us. Hang in there.

John, when I follow your instructions I end up with an empty track after choosing control type. I also don't have the control overlay on the screen after I choose the control type. All I have is the empty track and scenery.

something about a bad or missing file. I skipped it and finished the install.

No one picked up on that?

You can't skip a file and expect the program to work properly, if this was a digital download I'd suspect one of the files was corrupt and needs downloading again.

I guess not! :o

Steve --- if you redownload your files and try the install again, this will work. You were really close.

Please do register.

Yeah, I might have misunderstood "I downloaded everything to a new, dedicated folder and ran the install from there." I assumed that meant he fixed the original faulty file problem and tried again. If not, then obviously it would be advisable to try downloading again, installing with no errors, patching to the latest version with no errors.

After that comes learning what does which and why - when I first got trainz there were so many screwy things about quick drive I stopped using it early on.

"when I go back to Routes, I can't get the train on the tracks. Some routes I can get a consist of cars to appear, but they just slowly roll down the grade with no loco to attach them to"

Obviously talking about quick drive there, you don't get that in sessions. I found the process of making a simple session pretty easy to learn, but I'm coming from other trainsims, it's probably a steeper learning curve if they're new to trainsims in general. That's why this;

http://www.trainsim.com/vbts/showthread.php?306297-Beginners-guide-to-Trainz

Covers creating a new session step by step with pictures, the process won't be obvious to everybody.

I've done the entire download twice already with the same error at the the same place. At 22-23 hours each time, I will probably delete the whole thing and walk away before I download it again.

If one file is faulty there's no reason to download all the others again. Most common cause;

1. Some kind of download accelerator screwing up a file.
2. Bad sector on your hard drive.

If you have a some kind of download accelerator or other "enhancement" turn it off, if you haven't done it recently do some disk checking and defrag;

If all else fails contact the helpdesk.

Finally got a train running. Let's see if I've got this right. Click on Routes, then click on "edit route". Put together my preferred locos and rolling stock, then "save as...". Back to routes, then select my saved file. Is this seriously the way to simply drive a train? I can't even imagine how much time it's going to take me to begin to figure out all of the other options and parameters.

You can select a pre configured consist in Surveyor and add a locomotive. Yes the cars are primative. You can also create and save your own consist to that list of consists so that you may select it in Surveyor when you want it.
