My Trainz is on Steam--but I keep getting offers from N3V

The word "steam" is a double entendre on this site, so it is difficult to find other messages which might deal with my issue.

I purchased Trainz many years ago on Steam. I travel a lot; my Asus Zenbook doesn't have an optical drive, so Steam is the perfect solution.

However, I receive the N3V or Auran newsletters and keeping getting offers that are not available on Steam. Eventually I gave up Trainz and focused on Train Simulator. But, I am curious to know if I am right. I suspect that the Trainz publisher has little interest in selling on Steam, and simply does it because it is such a huge outlet? In the many years I have owned Trainz, I have had many offers from N3V, none of which have been available on Steam.

Can anyone clarify this for me?
PS I have contacted N3V and they simply responded that my version was too old to qualify for an upgrade price.

The newsletter put out by N3V is going to advertise stuff for sale on N3V's website (simulatorcentral). You wouldn't see Walmart advertising stuff for sale at Target would you?

Additionally there really isn't much available as an add ons for the original version of Trainz (that you have) in fact it isn't even supported anymore. The one thing I would encourage you to buy if your interested in Trainz more is a First Class Ticket. It will give you access to the Download Station where there are thousands of items you can download (for free) for you game.

Thank you. The light just went on! I thought that N3V and Auran and Trainz were all the same Company. So, the current promo from N3V for Trainz Driver applies only to this reseller.
I agree with you, PerRock, that my best course of action is to scrap my obsolete version and start again with a First Class Ticket. I just spent my meagre gaming allowance on upgrading to the latest Train Simulator, but when the Guardian Angel of the stock market starts to smile again I intend to do exactly as you suggest.

Many thanks to you both for your prompt and informative responses.

If you get the latest version(s) of Trainz, you don't need and FCT to access the DLS (although it's encouraged). However any old unsupported version of Trainz has to have an FCT to access the DLS.

FCTs do four things:
1) Allow high-speeds when downloading from the DLS.
2) Give some priority access to the DLS when servers are popular.
3) Removes the 100mb daily cap.
4) Allows people with only an unsupported version of Trainz to download from the DLS.

Of course this all may change in the future with the new MMO-Surveyor-Trainz-Thingy N3V recently announce; only time will tell.
