Murchison 2 DEM

I saw a post awhile back asking about it but the search didn't turn anything up.

Is it possible to get the DEM map for Murchison2? I would like to have just the map with no textures or anything else.

I've been downloading and checking out the DEM maps from Guarc/fishlipsatwork but find most of them are nothing like Murchison. Plus, those DEM's are absolutely huge with some of them having several hundred boards.

In comparison to Guarc DEM's, Murchison has a "compactness" to it. The mountains and valleys seem a bit smaller than US locations.

A DEM is a Digital Elevatin Model, a map of a real life area, with the prototype typography in place.

The Mucheson2 is a fictional place, I believe. You could take the route and delete all the assets (buildings, trees...etc...) and wipe the grid clean of all textures. Or you could delete all the assets in the routes config file. Then You would have a blank fictional DEM. No colored lines, no rivers, no nothing....just blank gray/yellow grid. You will be absolutely lost on where to lay track, roads, and rivers.

With a huge Fishlipsatwork DEM route, you can delete as many baseboards as you wish.

Or you could lay all your track on flat baseboards, apply a gradient of @ 2% or less to the trackage, hit smooth spline tool button, and start making your own mountains, all by hand.

Are you trying to build a backwoods tight radius mountain logging RR, or a high speed mainline ?

The main reason Murchison's dem has more compactnes, is because its shaped that way from the creator.
Our's (gaurc) are made from the real thing.

And I thought Murchison DEM was a real place. LOL

I've downloaded some Virginia maps from Guarc. That terrain better suits my plans and route building abilities.

I have edited some DEM's by deleting unwanted base boards and then converting the remaining boards from 10 to 5. Boring and time consuming.

So Sirgibby created the Murchison terrain huh.........It does state on his site that it is "dem based landscape". I wonder if he has terrain editing tools not available to the rest of us. I'm not able to create realistic terrain like he has.

Thanks for the info,
Randy

I believe the lay of the land of Murchison is based on one or more DEMs of the New Zealand coast but the railroad is fictional. Michael did edit the map to allow his trackplan to fit.

Hi guys

Just to keep the record straight. Murchison IS A DEM-BASED LAYOUT.
The data was downloaded from a DEM website and used to create the base for the layout.

It is also correct to say that this is a fictional railway. My aim has been to give the feel and look of New Zealand and New Zealand rail and I was determined not to have 100's of miles of the boring same-old same-old.

I laid the track through real DEM-BASED terrain (and modified where necessary) in a manner to have visual cameos and lots of change at regular intervals to keep the layout interesting and varied.

cheers
Michael

Well....you certainly did an outstanding job :)

I've tried and tried but just cannot get the look of Murchison. It's not that I want to copy what you have done it's just that I want the challenge of building a route in that terrain.

If the map isn't available I suppose I'll have to invest some time and learn how to make my own.

New Zealand has got to be a very cool place to live.

Like anywhere in the world it has its ups and downs. There's no denying the scenery is spectacular almost anywhere though.
Murchison is actually a small (population probably less than 500) town located in the top of the south island. After driving through there over xmas for a holiday I can say 100% that SirGibby's take on the area is absolutely spot on. Everything from the colours to the foliage is exactly what you will see, the only thing missing is a railway :hehe: but that is fairly typical of most of New Zealand in general.
