Moving DLC from one computer to another

I recently upgraded from my crappy Desktop computer with Windows Vista to a Super Laptop with Windows 7. My problem is I had a crap load of awesome DLC and a custom route I was building in TRS 06 on my Desktop. Most of the DLC I may never be able to find again and as for my route, well I spent alot of time on it and I'm not going to just throw it away. I want to transfer all of it over to my Laptop without having to send my computer to a computer specialist. Any one know if its possible?

This isn't as daunting as you think, trainman122.

Simply copy your local folder to a portable drive such as one of those Seagate GoDrives. - 500GB = roughly $45.00 these days. A 1TB is about $99.00.

Install Trainz on your new machine, put in any service pack you may need. When installed, test your installation to ensure everything works,

Now just copy your backed up data over to the laptop, replacing the local folder. When the copy is done, delete the Assets.tdx file and start up Trainz to let it rebuild the database for the new install.

You should be good to go.

An alternative to copy and replacing is to import your data using Content Manager Plus. Use the File Import Content... and browse to your backed up data. Just remember to commit your data if you don't have that setting saved in the settings.

OK, all is working perfectly as it should be. Thanks for the tip. I have one more question though, is it possible to copy and paste my Trainz 06 local folder into my Trainz 09 local folder and have it work the same way?

At least with TS2010 and TS12, you can copy the whole game, binaries and everything, and run it on another computer, or even run it as a separate installation, if you want. John's advice is technically better because a full installation forces the creation of Windows Registry entries, though Trainz doesn't require any of them to run. Long story short, you can use John's method with later Trainz (the directory is called userdata, not local, on newer Trainz - and it's also recommended you run a EDR when done), although the copy everything method might be a bit easier and less time-consuming.
