so i bought this sim, and i must say im fairly disappointed. no steam tutorial and very few scenarios. If you or something screws up it cant end itself, restart or continue from last point? whats the deal? seems like there wasnt much effort put into this expensive game... Where can i get additional scenarios and perhaps a tutorial to teach me how to drive steam?

Well, nows, it would kinda help if we knows wot version of Trainz you be runnin'.

I'm assuming it be TS2010?

If so you might be findin' that some of them dogdarn steams aint working too well? The reason bein' that them goddam Auran dudes changed the physics and then some when goin' from TRS2006 to TS2009.

If that be the case, try downloadin' these steamers (mouse click on the link):

I've modded them to run better than most in '09/10.

As for a steamer tutorial, try this documentation package:

Scenarios? Dunno about those. But go to the DLS here:

http://www.auran.com/TRS2004/DLS.php

Make sure all "Trainz Versions" are selected, type "philskene" in the "Text Search" box, select "Username" and finally "Session" as the "Category". You might find somthin' that will interest you other than the pretty thumbnails. Maybe not though, it's up to you.

I'd be mighty obliged if you tell me if this is useful.

says i need a key for all the download except the trainz 2010 stuff. should i just go buy an older version with more scenarios?

By default TS2010 will only show 5 star rated routes/sessions and (in Surveyor) 5 star rated assets. To disable the first, click the gold star on the route selection screen. To disable the second go into the options, look at Surveyor options, and scroll down to "show only favorite content" and uncheck it. (I believe all the 5 star items are supposed to be stuff ready for Native mode while the other stuff may or may not need compatibility mode. In particular a lot of old routes use trees that really don't look good in TS2010 Native mode.)

There should be tutorials there for most if not all aspects of running a train among the route sessions. (Tutorials about creating routes/sessions is another story.) TS2010 includes a ton of routes and sessions from older versions.

And by the way the Surveyor favorites thing is covered in the manual, which most people don't apparently read. :)

We really could use a sticky thread with this info, so that we can point people there when they don't read it since this keeps coming up. ;)

ahh thank you... i still dont see a steam tutorial.

however, have you seen that manual it's... wow is all i can say

" ... says i need a key for all the download except the trainz 2010 stuff."

As far as I'm aware, if you can download TS2010 content you can also download all earlier content.

Have you entered your username and password correctly in the TS2010 set up screen? Check by testing if you can download '10 material.

There is a steam tutorial in one of the UK routes. I've forgotten which, but if you look through those routes in 2010 you'll find that tutorial. I ran it yesterday and it was quite good.

As mentioned above, you have to untick the gold star above the routes list to see all the routes available with 2010.

The best version of Trainz so far for scenarios is TRS2004 (upgraded to its SP4). In some countries TRS2004 is now available at a very low cost. After TRS2004 Auran dropped support for scenarios.

TS2010 offers a lot of hope of eventually reaching or perhaps even exceeding that standard, but only if and when sufficient native mode content has been created for it.

Outback Australia 2 and Banks Heath both seem to have steam engine tutorials. (I did a CMP search for sessions with Steam in the name and then looked at the dependencies to find the route.)

List of routes that have Tutorial sessions:
Banks Heath <kuid:-18:1846763756>
British Midlands 2 <kuid:-3:10172>
City and Country USA 2 <kuid:-3:10174>
Highland Valley Industries <kuid:-3:10173>
Outback Australia 2 <kuid:-3:10176>
Springfield Industrial District <kuid:447264:1035>

To get the above I searched for sessions with Tutorial in the name, did view dependencies, did view in main list, and added a Category:Routes search filter.

The search filters are a very powerful tool, at least when searching local content. The category search doesn't work all that well on DLS content for some reason. (Most DLS items show up as being "Misc" instead of what they really are.)

I just download good routes like the ones created by MGSsapper, and read the manual on steam operation, and google the topic on the net, and practice. With some effort, it is fairly easy to learn, like anything else in life. Never drive in DCC mode if you want to learn correctly.
