Modeling question

I have been wanting to design my own trains for a very long time, and I just now got to it. I found out to my dismay that gMax is now pretty much ancient history and is not available anywhere, and the plugins for 3ds Max on the trainz website don't work. I would really like to model, and preferrably soon, and it would be nice to know all of the software and converters available for Trainz development.

Thanks in advance!

What do you mean? Does it have a feature so that you can easily apply a texture to a face, instead of to the entire object, like in GMax???

I haven't used it but supposedly it can be used to do normals mapping, baked shadows and mapped textures that Gmax can't do.

The options are listed complete with where to get the software here

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Trainz

under "Asset Creation."

GMAX is still available but my recommendation would be Blender. Have a read through Paul Hobbs first Blender tutorial before deciding

http://www.44090digitalmodels.co.uk

If you still wish to go GMAX then if you dig on his web site he has some older GMAX tutorials including setting up GMAX for Trainz.

To get a flavour for Blender you might like to try the tutorial in the wikibook Trainz which takes you through creating a simple scenery object and eventually puts it on the track as a wagon.

Best of luck and ask in the forum if you have problems.
