Minimum distance required for a train/tram to clear and be able to change points?

First, would it be helpful if either the General Trainz section was moved to the Support section for the different versions, or at least have in that section, a section for all versions?

What is the minimum distance required for a train (including tram, plane, bus, etc) to clear points (that's turnouts in Yanky land! :hehe: ) at the junctions, so that you can change the direction of the junction?

Actually in ***** layout case, it applies to trams.

Wonder if that distance might be different for things like the No.8 points in Fixed Track than for the, ah, what do you call them?, automatic, switches in the flexible track?

You raise a good question.

Looks like time to go do some empirical testing.

Are you asking about the default setting for trainz points or the clearance in real life. The default setting is 20 metres but from 2006 onwards this can be changed to anything you want but it has to be done for each point.

It could be done in TRS2004 but the information was retained just for that session.

In real life I expect there are rules but I guess it would have to be that the leading wheel must be clear of the moving blades.

As Narrowgauge says: If you set the point radius of action in 04, you lose these after changing sessions. But from 06 onwards, this setting is memorized!. You have to set it in a session, not a map. How I do it: open the advanced menu in triggers and type 06 in the box. Now click on the icon (middle one for "set"), and click on all the points you have, one by one. Now, you should be able to change the points even if the loco is almost on top of it. Very helpful if you have a busy yard. I wish if these settings can be memorized so you could transport them to other sessions, but so far nobody has been able to do it. So I make one master session and copy it for as many sessions I need (Using 09).

In the UK pointswitches worked from a signalbox/ signalling centre are protected by a track circuit. The track circuit must be clear (unoccupied) before the points can be moved.
If the track circuit fails mechanical points can be operated by an emergency release (button) in the signalbox. Power operated points must be wound over on the ground with a point handle.

You can set the radius in Surveyor and it is saved from then on.

Select the junction lever where you want to change the radius. In the track menu go to the Right hand menu, click on Advanced. you will see three buttons. Lefthand is 'Get Radius', the centre is 'Set Radius' and the righthand one is 'Adjust Radius'. Enter your chosen value in the text box and click 'Set Radius'. That's it. If you want to check it, click on 'Get Radius'.

This applies to switches, triggers and possibly buffers(bumpers).

It is in the TRS2006 instructions so it should be present in instructions for later versions.

Did I answer correctly the questions you posted? If you ask a question, and it has been answered, it is good manners to confirm it was the right answer.

Well I found it useful as I have been trying to fathom out how to get closer to the points, never occurred to me to click advanced! I had some daft idea it was related to the proximity of the next spline point.
Now I have working head shunts!! So many thanks for that.
