Military Trains

I like Submarines&Trainz
Not too often do you see military trains because they are usually top secret or not spoke of but every so often your by the tracks and all of a sudden moment you see three Union Pacific Sd-90's carrying a train with Abrams and Humvees. the last one i saw had Several jeeps and tanks perfurably Abrams and Bradleys along with AH-1 cobra parts and others. I want to know if there are still military trains moving around out there or have they become obsolete to the new C-17s? How about in other Countries?

Maybe it's because of where I am, but I often see movements of military hardware on the railroads through Dallas / Fort Worth, sometimes in its own consist, sometimes mixed in with general freight.

Military trains

I just retired after 21 yrs of service here at Fort Benning , Ga. Here you can see trains loaded with Bradleys, Abrams, M88 recovery vehicles in the train yards or making there way to the ports or training centers. If you are located near a base that has deployable units these trains are a common sight.

Would any of the Military Trains be of a basic color ?? There are some wagons on the DLS and they are all grey (from memory), or would they just be "normal" wagons that are used by a Railway company working for the military?

Thanks,

Craig

From videos I watched on youtube the cars are pretty much like any other freight cars the RR would use to transport anything needing a flat. It appeared they were just using TOTX cars just like a normal company would to transport tractors or something. Just perhaps a little more durable to withstand the immense weight the M1A1s and Bradly's put on.

Thanks for that, it is what I thought anyway. Having the same colour (grey) for all Military Trains would then be an easy target for any "Enemy" attack.

I did just recall from something my cousin told me. When he was in the Air force he worked on our nuclear warheads and said that secret trains do in fact move around with top secret stuff aswell as military equipment. i would think that that would be very risky.

the most memorable military trains carring missle i know of are the German V2 rocket trains during WWII. (does any one know where i can get a U.S. Army McArthur 2-8-2 for trainz along with cars loaded with WWII equipment on the DLS or third-party conent?)

most military supply trains are are operated buy privet contractors like up and bnsf and there are on dead giveaways on what is military and what is not

I suppose that post 911, RR security is much tighter (or is it ? I wonder ? ).

In the 1990's there was a millitary shipment of Patriot MRL on flat cars. Several 500lb cluster bombs were stolen from the ______ Frieight Yard. The FRA, and DOJ locked the barn door, after the horse was stolen, and was swarming the yard, investigating just how easily some unguarded traincars covered with tarps were robbed. After the goods were stolen, they then posted armed gaurds all around the robbed eguipment. I believe the bombs were never recovered.

Military trainz input

In the past I built an entire German BP42/44 upgraded train for trainz and offered it via my now gone websit.
I also Built a Polist T18 rail scout, no takers.
there was one download of it.

It seems the nature of the comunity is for trains to be primarly a peaceful, no stress enviroment.

Understandable.

How exactly does one keep a train "top secret"?

Is there secret underground ROW that we don't know about or something? Or are they just invisible?

This inevitably leads to the question of how CTC deals with an invisible train.

"Q235, you are not clear to enter the interlocking."

"But there's nothing there!"

"Q235, do not question CTC."

Well no they aren't invisible or underground (course i have heard rumors of a subway trainstation that stops under the Capitol buildings, doesnt mean they're true) but i talked to a friend of mine and he said they classify trains as x,y, and z according to their load code level. if we had a guy who worked for Union Pacific or some other railroad maybe he could tell us. reason why its top secret is possibly because they don't want some other country or terrorist organization to find it, and then rob/blow it up.

most cars ive seen on a military train have the prefix DODX (presumably for department of defense), and honestly. norfolk is kinda correct, i mean obviously if you see a military train its not "invisible" but however, i have looked at cad (dispatchers screen) and was like "what in the world is that symbol", so you try to pull up the paperwork on the computer and the paperwork is there, but its really so vague you have no idea what it is. so yeah, for paperwork purposes these trains are almost invisible. dispatchers usually call them by engine number rather than train id. and now that i think about it, i have never seen any of these trains held out in a siding, everytime i see one, they are moving. so good luck trying to find one.

Here in the United Kingdom, we do have military trains, but they are very rare, and as was said in an earlier post, they are top secret, how do we keep them secret, they only travel at 3am in the morning, under the cover of darkness.

We usually have Russian aircraft flying over the UK, taking photo's and monitoring us, and because they fly above our airspace, we can't do nothing about them, so to prevent them from taking pictures of military trains, they run them on heavily used freight lines overnight, people who live by these heavily used freight lines, get used to the noise, so they go un-noticed.

I've only seen one, going towards Liverpool docks, but only at night, never of a day. They were similar to this...
