Mileposts! Has anyone got a new idea?

Hi, If you are building a massive route, i.e fifty miles or so, what is the best way to hang out mileposts on your route? Love to hear from you.

Assemble a 1609m train on a straight track (a 5280' ruler may be inaccurate), Name it something like: "1 mile consist" ... place it on your route, and move it along to lay mileposts ... not every mile has a milepost, for each and every mile ... some signals show decimal mileposts, ie: 241.7

I did 64+ miles worth of mileposts by building a 1 mile long train out of 50ft. boxcars. Started where I wanted it to start and then used the "move" tool from the "Trains" flyout menu to move it along and place my markers. A little tedious, but it got done.

find out where known mileposts are on the prototype DEM, as if your 1 mile long consist is even 10 foot off, in 50 miles that is a considerable amount.

Milepost 242.0 is @ 200' west, past the old Horseshoe Curve tool shack

There's a mile-long or km-long, depending upon which consist you decide to make up out of some wagons by wilem2 . Then there are mile-post assets, which you then plop down at the end of the consist.

There's no faster way to do this that I can think of, unfortunately.

Could you not just use the odometer?

Sounds like a great idea, but there's a problem. Driving sessions can't be edited in the route or session editor, and the editor will not remember where you left off in the driving session. This means you have to leave where you are driving, find something to reference then find it again in the editor and this is not very accurate. The best way is to use the built-in ruler to make a 1-mile long train consist, or use the assets I pointed out above by Wilem. (wilem2). He made these to be exactly 1-mile or 1km long, depending upon which ones you want to use.

Just a note that not every 'railroad mile' is an actual 5280' mile. Some are several feet more or less, and then additional construction on the line may have added formula locations where the line may have shrunk or grown from it's original path. If you are modeling a prototype line locating a chart that shows each milepost can greatly help. If you are freelancing, since the above holds true, it isn't terribly important to have exact marker locations at a mile's length.
