Here you'll notice the pantographs going up as the train continues northbound (outbound) towards Revere Beach and Wonderland. Up to the Airport station, the line is third rail. From the Airport out, the line is overhead wires.
The wires were first put by the Boston Revere Beach and Lynn (BRB&L) during the early 1900s. When the system went under in the 1940s, the tracks were taken up, but the catenary was left in place. When the previous tranis company (Boston Elevated) took over the line, they used the catenary for the outer-lying areas. The line was opened in 1952 when Logan first was opened up.
Note: I didn't take these videos. They're something that I found on You-Tube.
