Making Trains Real

Hi all I was wondering how do I make trains look real like I have seen on some
of the other routes posted on the forums

It would be a very nice change to see properly a painted/textured assets. So many are nice models but a quick spray with the Paint Can and they are uploaded. They look like toy assets. They certainly do not look real. Some people like the new simple model train assets. I like assets that someone took the time to LOOK REAL.

One way of improving appearance is to use photographs as a basis for textures - if they are available. This, of course, is nothing new.

Some guys put a lot of effort and time into it. Making sure the numbers, heralds, lettering are accurate, right colour, nice weathering, and lots of other features. Right type of roof, ends, trucks, etc. I only wish I had their talent! I don't think it takes long for even a newbie like me to discover who is making the very best rolling stock, and also who the great "skinners" are. I also love to find top quality un-weathered rolling stock. You can always use a car with a new paint job on it, but I's sure love to be able to learn how to "throw some dirt and grime" on them and give them a bit of a faded out look. I think weathering is best left to the artistic types, just like in model railroading. Ah, you're lucky, the wife is dragging me out the door! I'd Like to thank you guys who give us this great looking rolling stock.
Cheers.....Rick.....thanks again!

rickf77 you can use corel paint to do reskinning its kinda hard but once you get the idea you should be able to do anything and getting corel pro is cheaper than photoshop or others.

G'day cvkiwi,

It is with much regret, Chris, that I say to you (and to every one else who has submitted responses to your enquiry in this thread - despite the excellence of some of these responses)...

..."...ain't never gonna happen..."...

...there is one reason (and one reason only) why the 'virtual' models created for Trainz will NEVER 'look real' and that is simply because the JET rendering engine is INCAPABLE of reproducing shadows in any "realistic" way. No amount of using "photo-realistic" textures (a practise, incidentally, that I wholeheartedly recommend and endeavour to adhere to in my own modelling and one which does go along way towards improving the realistic appearance of any model), will make anything look real if there are no realistically cast visible shadows. Now, don't misunderstand me here, I don't mean just a 'lack' of the 'usual' ground shadows (which we have come to expect as 'normal' in Trainz) but I mean the more complex reproduction of shadows from one object (other than just a 'Traincar' asset) on any and every other object AND the casting of shadows of protruding bits of any object upon itself (where such is appropriate, of course). Nor am I referring to the currently 'accepted' norm of a shadow being entirely 'sharp' along it's edge. I would also respectfully submit that any cast shadows should have an appropriate 'intensity', commensurate with the intensity of the light source...

...until such tine as the JET rendering Engine (since it seems that the good folks at N3V have no intention of using any other) becomes capable of providing such detail, nothing created in Trainz will EVER look 'real'...

I have to ask, given the question, do you mean CREATING trains - as in making an brand new model from scratch, or do you mean playing the game?

I can imagine you might mean making a model and textures, which has been covered by others.

I can also imagine that you are seeing realistic looking rolling stock, locomotives, and scenery in screenshots and wonder how you can get your game to look like that.

In the later case it's a matter of what rolling stock and locomotives you use, and what routes you use them on.

Take a look at www.jointedrail.com and you'll see some EXCELLENT and realistic looking assets of all kinds.
