Making an Economy/Business owner script?

Has anyone ever [made/thought of making/though it would be fun to play in a route with] an economy/business owner script built in?

I frankly have no idea how the economics of railroad transportation work, but I was thinking of something along these lines: You start off with a specific amount of cash (maybe even take out a loan!), purchase your first engine, then begin doing jobs around the railroad, competing for hauling cargo with other NPCs. As you make money, you can spend it on maintaining your engine (purchasing fuel/sand/water/etc.), upgrading your engine, and maybe even hiring on NPCs.

Now, like I said, I really don't know how the railroad transportation industry works :P I have a feeling that you can't just roll up to your nearest oil refinery and grab a few tankers, although I figure this script/model would fit in well with what is already provided in the TS12 gameplay mechanics.

I've never scripted anything in TS12 before, does what I want to do sound possible? Any thoughts at all?

well for a start that sounds so much like the old "Chris Sawyer's Locomotion" :P but yeah i do see want ya looking for & yeah it would be good to see something like that i guess :P i don't know how ya would go about it in TRS.

I guess I'm not sure how I would go about it either :P I have much to learn in the world of scripting for TS! All the more fun, I suppose :)

I would have said Railroad Tycoon, now Sid Meier's Railroads (http://www.2kgames.com/railroads/railroads.html). I can't imagine that anyone could script it (how many products are on the DLS?; how many industries produce/consume them), but even if they could, what kind of hardware would we need to actually operate such a session? I really don't have the space for an IBM mainframe. I agree with the concept that we should remember that the railroads were in it for the money and they made it by getting loads from Point A to Point B, but I'd hate to see it become a part of Trainz.

If you're interested in how railroads operate check out http://www.opsig.org/. They're a model railroad site, but a lot of the information is applicable to Trainz as well.

Thanks for the link, Rick :) I think that's going to be an interesting read for me, I've been playing railroad sim games for awhile and always wondered what the freight trains I could hear at night were doing, now I'll know!

I guess I've always been a tycoon-er at heart. Are scripts fairly CPU intensive to run? I guess I wasn't planning on getting too in-depth with the whole economy simulation part, but then again, I haven't really thought this out :P Does it seem like adding this economy aspect may take away from the trainz simulation? I could certainly understand that.
