What is the purpose of the elevated railroad ?
And what are those two angled walls with portals cut in them ?

Best guess, to make it easier to get finished lumber from the mill to the top of the stacks. If you just have to drop it down off the cart, then no need to raise it up meaning less work.
As for the walls, Id think they might be a wind break. Or to help keep sparks form reaching the lumber.
But this is speculation pulled form knowledge o what I think would work best. Educated guess's in other words. But it's cool.

After reading the article referenced in the post above this one, it seems the railway delivery system is elevated, to use gravity to get the cars down the line. The elevated rails are sloped towards the sort yards, so that the cars can be manually rolled to their unloading points, w/o using a steam engine.
I don't see any cranes in the yards, so I'm thinking they may have unloaded by hand?
It's hard to see in the picture in post no. 4, but I think the cars would be returned to the load point with a cable pull system, but that's just a guess of course.
The Jennings Brothers Hemlock Mills in Maryland here, also has an elevated railways system >

It's a real shame that the modern day lumberjack is the guy in the cab of this disastrous thing.

I eat my lunch,
I go to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays I go shopping,
And have buttered scones for tea.
