Lost Mini-Map Details

A friend created the topography I needed using DEM and all that stuff that is a foreign language to me. When I opened it in Surveyor, it was awesome. All those hills and valleys already to lay track. All of the roadways, tracks and waterways were marked on the mini-map. I spent some time lay track and roads to match the mini-map. I saved it and closed Trainz. When I came back to it a day later, all the markings on the mini-map have disappeared except for the rail I have laid.

Does anyone know how to restore the mini-map details that were there originally?

Hi Dap,

I'm afraid resetting the minimap to its initial state is not possible.

Let me try to explain:

The minimap is part of the Trainz .gnd file but not an attribute of the ground vertices (the terrain itself). Hence, the external DEM terrain generation tools HOG and TransDEM (don't know about MapMaker) can and do create both the ground, optionally painted with ground textures, and the minimap as completely independent objects.

However, such an independent minimap will only last, if the ground textures are more or less identical to the minimap.

When you open Surveyor for such a .gnd file the first time you will see terrain and minimap as built by the external tool. The moment you start editing in Surveyor, you implicitly tell Surveyor that your terrain has changed and it should rebuild the minimap to reflect your changes. Surveyor does this during .gnd file saving. Data source for the rebuilt minimap is ground texturing plus certain objects like track. Unfortunately, with a blank ground you will receive a new blank minimap.

Do you have the HOG textures by fishlipsatwork?

Silly question, yes, but the same thing was happening to me because I didn't have the HOG textures on my computer.

They're available here.

OK, I have put the "textures" folders Hog00 thru Hog71 into a folder labeled "ground' located at :/program files/Auran/TRS2006/World/Custom/
but nothing has changed when I open Surveyor. The markings on the map are still not on the terrain.

Do I need to do something else like "commit" these texture assets? And if so, how? Or do I need to go to HOG and do something to get them on the terrain?

thanks,
Dap

Okay,

1) remove them from the ground folder and put them where you can easily find them (like the Desktop).

2) If you can get it to work for more than 30 seconds, open CMP and select "Import Content". Select the folder containing the HOG textures and click the open/import button (my CMP won't load atm, so I can't tell you which it is)

3) "view in main list" when CMP finished installing them, "select all", and commit.

Ferrous,

Thanks for the help. It WORKS ! ! ! Now I have over 150 miles of track to lay . . .

Same problem in Trainz 2010. Street map in mini map and I lay a bit of track and close. Next day street map disappeared from mini map.

Route is Gold_Coast10

I read the above hint about Hog00 thru Hog71 and tried that without success. Opening CMP and select "Import Content" fails with the statement "unsupported file type".

Thanks for any help.

What does your terrain look like in Surveyor? Map ground texture or blank?

What dependencies did your route template report when importing it with Trainz Content Manager?

Some observations in my trainz 2010 using the four following basic route DEMs from http://forum.victrainz.com.au/index.php These are just the blank ground textures with DEM generated heights. They have detailed street maps in the mini maps. No additions such as landscape colours or track etc.

Barraba_Branch.cdp [very recent addition to the list]
Brisbane_to_Gold_Coast10.cdp
QRCityTrain.cdp
shorncliffeTS09.cdp

If adding landscape texture such as grass or change the height, the routes immediately start losing the street maps in the mini map window for the local immediate area where working only, but the rest of the route's street map stays in the mini window. But no street map in the mini map window at all after closing program and restarting next day.

On the other hand, if only adding rail track, station buildings and highways, without changing the height or adding ground texture such as grass, there is no ill effect at that point in time and the street map in mini map stays for that session but is lost after closing program and restarting next day.

I used the Barraba_Branch,<kuid2:1854:20004:1> as a test route as I did not previously have it on my syetem. Downloaded to storage folder on my computer and imported it from my storage folder. Content manager did not report any missing dependencies as it was just the above kuid.

G'day Petan,

If you have the mini-map showing (irrespective of the type of map being displayed - Topographic or T.I.G.E.R. data), and nothing showing on the terrain (especially for any maps downloaded from the Victrainz Storage Area), then you are missing one of two texture sets. If the mini-map shows T.I.G.E.R. data, then you must download and install the HOG Texture Set. On the other hand, if the mini-map shows a topographic type mini-map (and most of the ones at Victrainz do) and the previous installation of the HOG Texture Set has not solved the problem, then it is the TransDEM Texture Set that is missing from your installation. I was under the (apparent) misapprehension that the TransDEM Texture Set was built-in in Trainz versions later than (and including) TS2009, so I would not have expected there to be any issues in this regard. You may download the Texture Set (stored as a *.cdp type file) that you need from the same location (using the same method as you did to obtain the routes) as the routes (look for the file called "TransDEM_Texture_Set.cdp"). Once you download and install the set, the display in the mini-map will magically appear on the terrain (within the confines of the Trainz resolution and the TransDEM colour settings) the next time you open the route and any changes you make to the route will be reflected in the way they are intended as geophil noted above...

A million thank yours !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TransDEM_Texture_Set.cdp. did the trick and will now allow me to get going. I tried it on Barraba_Branch.cdp and Brisbane_to_Gold_Coast10.cdp
and the mini map stayed intact when I added grass and hills and was still there after I did a shut down and restart. The display in the mini-map did magically appear on the terrain as well :D :D

Well, that's good new, as Barraba_Branch was done for me.(thanks Jerker:D) I had a similar problem, the textures weren't disappearing completely, but they did start to fade slightly, making detail on the mini-map hard to distinguish.

Edit: As a side-note, I did, after editing the route in surveyor, note that CM 3.3 reported missing dependencies for theis route. That file cleared them right up. Thank you, again Jerker, and Petan, for bringing this issue up.

Matt.
