Locomotives Running Too Slow (Trainz 2009)

Every Locomotive i've got on Trainz 2009, including some from the DLS just take too much time to reach full speed as they accelerate so slowly! Anyone got any idea on how i can fix this problem??

Ok I may understand a few things about that this subject. Theirs two ways you can look at this.

1. Pc specs which may include your graphics card ram and processor speed

2. if your locomotive is slow when you are playing in drive mode, make sure your for e.g. if you have 4gb ram windows takes 2gb ram so it leaves the game to have two. make sure you have no running programs running in background and check task manager.

if its still slow, make sure you have the top range graphics card and and 8gb ram and 3.5 or higher processor and may include motherboard change.

because I had a simular problem

Hi fizzywizzy

First of all welcome to the forums.

If the locos that you are having problems with were made for older versions of Trainz then they may need the max-accel and max-decel tag figures increasing in the engine-specs. If you don't know how to do this then post back with the name and kuid number of a loco that you are having problems with and I'll explain how to do it.

Sorry there boyerm25, but I agree with Kennilworth. Many of the locomotives made for older versions may require a tweak.

If I remember rightly, Trainz Classics 3 modified the way that enginespecs worked, so any that have a trainz-build lower than 2.8 may need their max-accel and max-decel, as well as a few other tags, updated.

Yeah, but the OP said "Every Locomotive i've got on Trainz 2009". This would include the built-in ones and surely they don't need tweaking to run correctly.

Hi again

Can you give me the name and kuid of a loco that is accelerating slowly please? I can then take you through the procedure for that loco.

Hi i can't find the KUID of it as i downloaded it from Content Manager but the name of this particular loco is Class 86235 ONE.

Hi again

I've downloaded the loco into TS12 so that I could check the engine spec file and the figures do need updating. To do that you need to find the loco in content manager and right click on it to bring up the menu - left click on "View dependencies" - a small box will open up showing the dependencies for the loco and you then click on the button at bottom left of that which says "View in main list". This will put all the dependencies into content manager.

The engine spec in this case is called "86/2 engine". Right click on this to open up the menu again and move the mouse pointer over "Edit" which should bring up a sub menu. Click on "Edit in Explorer" and a box should open up containing two files called "config" and "notes". Double click on "config" and it should open up in Notepad.

Look down the text until you see the word "motor". This is followed by a section of tags between brackets. Look at these tags and find the one called max-accel which is set at 6000. Immediately below it is the max-decel tag which is set at 12000. These figures were ideal for the trainz version that the loco was made for but are too low for later versions including TRS2009. As a rough guide these figures need to be multiplied by 4 times so the max-accel figure will become 24000 and the max-decel figure will be 48000. Edit the two figures to these values.

When you have finished close notepad making sure that you save the changes when it asks you. Close the other box down that shows the two files and then make sure that the "86/2 Engine2 file is highlighted. Right click on it again - hover over "Edit" again to open up the sub menu and click on "Commit". Once the file has commited, close content manager and go into Surveyor and delete the loco and then replace it to ensure that the new changes take effect. Close Surveyor and go into Driver and see if the changes have improved things.

Bear in mind that these figures are a starting point and you may need to make further adjustments to get the performance that you want. To get faster acceleration make max-accel bigger and to improve braking make max-decel bigger. These changes will only apply to DC mode and AI train operation so they will have no effect if you drive in cab mode.

With other locos the engine spec may have different names which is why I wanted a specific loco to work with for your first attempt. If you do alter other locos you may have to check two or three of the dependencies to find the engine-spec if the naming isn't obvious.

I haven't checked the altered engine spec as the loco brings up a shed load of errors in TS12 and I haven't got the time to correct them all.

If you have trouble following any of this then post back and I'll clarify any problem areas.

Regards

Brian
