load / unload

what is the best way or most efficient way to load and unload a train at a stop?
If I have a consist of 4 reefers, and the station has products to load , as well as items on the train to unload, how do I set that up?
At present i would select the station and then select load, then unload. But that doesn't seem very efficient somehow.

I do not believe that you can have "load" and "unload" commands immediately following each other without a "Drive ../Navigate .." command between them.

A number of possible solutions have come to my mind but most of them are probably too complex to work. But try this.
  1. set up a trackmark at least one train length beyond the industry asset
  2. issue "Drive to <industry_name>" and "Unload" commands
  3. followed by a "Drive to Trackmark <name_of_above_trackmark>"
  4. followed by "Drive to <industry_name>" and "Load" commands
  5. then "Drive Via <name_of_above_trackmark>" to continue the journey in the same direction
Alternatively, try placing the Unload and Load assets on separate sidings.

When setting up a Industry to load and unload you should use two difference category.
bulk loads=coal,ore,grains.= Hoppers,gondolas
liquids-dieselfuel,crue,LPG,NPG,petrol.= Tankers
Items-containers,general goods,lumber,logs.=Flatcar,gondola.bulkheads
Set it up to load Item and to unload Bulk this way you won't have the cars L/U right after you enter the IND.( say a hopper unloading coal and a flat car loading lumber.)
For setting up a IND to load i set it to max.( intial & produce )
For setting up a IND to unload it depends on how long it will take for your train to get to the IND to unload. ( If it take a hour to get to the IND then if your IND comsume 3 items a min. so you will need to start with 190 items so the IND don't run out.)
When setting up a IND to load more then one product again using difference categories will give you less headacks of not having cars load with products you don't want on some cars.

with the MIN ABOVE replys ya gonna have extra moves........
with the lars ya can spot cars to unload and reload but pending the commodities with cars and the industries which ya can reconfigure em saves ya trouble but if ya a hit and run like I guessing most trainzers are then ya manually have to or place a track mark for it to command to back out of the industry and reset to go back to the industry and load.........

OK, That all makes sense. One morew related (maybe?) question. Is it possible to uncouple a car at an industry. Or better yet, a series of cars at a series of industries. Then come back and collect them to continue there journey? i.e. uncouple a reefer car at a dairy place for loading, then pick it up later to take it away full?

I believe that I have seen this done in a scripted scenario in Trainz 2006 or 2004 but support for that particular mode of operation was discontinued in the next version of Trainz for reasons I do not know.

An alternative method I have used which was easy to implement was to:
  1. drive the loaded wagons to an industry
  2. use the UNLOAD command
  3. move the unloaded wagons further along the siding beyond the range of the industry asset
  4. uncouple the wagons
then, on the return trip:
  1. couple to the empty wagons in the siding
  2. drive the short distance to the industry asset
  3. use the LOAD command
then continue on your route.

This can be done using the protolars industries from TPR

There are also two on the DLS from philskene, just search for protolars.
