Light Problem With Regards To Station

Routelayer Ordinaire...
Hi Everyone,

I'm in the process of creating a major station and I've been wanting to put in some lights in, for the passengers' safety of course. ;) The problem is, I can't seem to find an overhead light. I've been wanting to put in an overhead light system in with the colour of a yellowish/orange light, sort of like in this picture (look to the far right or wait until the end of the video when he pans out to see what I mean):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cwn7vm0FWQ

I found a white light that I could use as an overhead light (that would hang from the roof) but the length of the omitted light is very small. See this picture:

When I get creative/semi-sneaky and try to put a highway light into my station, the base of the light actually goes under the platform making it look rather...well useless! See the picture:

I could raise it up to get the base of the light to show but then I wont see the actual light at all. See this picture:

I'm at a loss what to do...I was wondering if someone knew of a good overhead light that actually puts out a lot of light and can be raised/lowered (or perhaps which has an adjustable base?). I'd prefer a yellowish/orange hue like in the youtube video but I'd settle for a white light. :)

The only other solution I could think of is that there might be a way to adjust the base via the config. I'm sure it's a nasty process but perhaps someone could guide me through that?

Suggestions anyone?

p.s. sorry about the size of the pictures: I'm still learning how to use imageshack on a regular basis. :)

The answer is staring you in the face. Install two lights. The first can be for your 'pool of light' on the platform, and the second the actual light itself. Just raise the first light slightly higher than the second to get the effect you require.

Best wishes,
Padster

Thanks for the reply and advice Padster,

I thought about doing that (using the overhead lamp with the mini cone/base) and then adding the light pool, but it looks very...strange (because it looks like the light just disappears in mid air until it hits the ground). With a light that is placed on the ground with a larger base/cone that goes through the air, it looks a lot better. If I have no other choice, I guess I'll have to settle for this as a solution, but it wont look very good. Plus, I was hoping to use a yellow light if possible. I'll keep playing around with it and see what I can do, but I think I've reached a brick wall.

If anyone knows how to edit the actual light that comes out of the lamp itself, that might just be the perfect solution although I bet that totally depends on the model itself and has to be changed in the program that made it (I.E. Gmax).

That's not what Padster said (which is really good advice and something I'd never thought of before). Padster's advice is that you use the highway lamp (as in your pic), using two at each location - one set to be seen and throw the visible beam of light, and one set higher (and not seen) which provides the pool of light on the platform.

Just tried it myself - works a treat.

Ah, now I see what he's saying! :) That sounds like a really good idea. The only problem I can see is that it's going to really up the polygon count. @@ I'll have to use T.O. to see what the lowest polygon count light is and experiment/compromise. I want to release this route to the public someday and I'm sure the majority of people will have a better computer than the one I'm using by that time (haha including myself) but I just worry that the frame rates will be slower (for a 20 track station with elevators, stairs, escalators, stanchion supports, platform sign supports and platform signs. I've tried to be as conservative as possible, but I wonder what it'll be like with all those lights in there...I'll have to play around with it and see.

Still, thank you for the clarification b9k9kiwi. :) Now I understand what Padster meant.

Would these work Gisa?

Something I found while working on my route. Suprise, suprise.:o

Hi Titaniclover,

Thanks for the suggestion. :) Those were the lights I was thinking of using, but I'd have to use TWO (2) of them (one slightly higher than the other one) to give the affect I want to produce. Let me show you via a picture:

This is before I lower the second light (which will appear attached to the roof when I lower it) afterwards. with some adjustments:

Still, I do worry about the polygon count and now that I look at it, the cone of the light does disappear so I might be better off just using the ovehead lamp and pool below. I do think the yellow light looks better, but that's just me. :)

Fourjays5000 has a lightbase, 8 types, to go with his spline streetlights. It's just a ball of light that goes under the lamp at whatever height you need it to be.
Look for Kuid 147772:99981 and go to View Pack to see the whole collection.

Thank you very much Claude! I downloaded them and will give them a try later. :)

Vulcan has several light pools on the DLS that might solve your problem. They will light up your platforms and you don't even need to install any lamps. However they are white not yellow.:D

I tried the lightpools out today. I thought they'd work great but the result was...comical :D

Alistair: Help! Noooo! I'm drowning in light! Drownnnning! :D

They would and will work out great for other parts of the route (when I finish it in a few years at this rate...). I decided that I would just use 1 overhead lamp and incorporate no light pool (I've decided I'd like to emulate the lack of bright lighting in several of the stations I've visited in my short time here on e.a.r.t.h.[notably Toronto's Union Station and Montreal's Gare De Central, if my French isn't too rusty:hehe: ]).

Anyhow, thank you everyone for your advice. At least I got some new light pools! :D
