Layout Building - Trainz Versions - Just Curious

sterrett

Remember the Withered Arm
Say I import a route, built for TRS2004, into TRS2010.

If I do a bit of work on the route, just using TRS2004 assets and none of the built in TRS2010 assets, can I export the route again so that it is useable in TC3?

Just curious.

(What I wold like to do, is import a route and use the "Replace Assets" feature to change track and signals and then use the route in TC3, if that makes sense!)

Thank you for your thoughts.

Hmmm When in 2004 why not use TO ( Trainz Objects )and change the track & Signals then export it into TC3.
what you suggested seems a long way around, so can't see your logic.

Unless of course the new track you want to use, is made in 06 or o9 ?

As you mentioned that you dont to use 2010 assets.

You can't export backwards from 2010 after editing, not by changing version number and not even to 2009, put simply the format of the files that make up the route has changed.

Thanks for that - I had tried it, thinking I could be clever and just edit the version number afterwards!

I will try the Trainz Objects thing though - both Track and Signals I want to use are made for TC3.

You might be able to from 09 to TC but 10 is completely different.
Not quite.

Route file formats changed significantly between TC and TS2009, and, to a much smaller extent, again between TS2009 and TS2010. TRS2004 (SP4), TRS2006 and TC used the same format, however, starting with TRS2006, the file naming convention changed.

The biggest modification was the one in the .gnd file between TC and TS2009, to accommodate the 5 m terrain grid, to allow ground texture definitions per baseboard, and also to save some space by reducing the footprint of the minimap.

Therefore, even with the build numbers downgraded and some possible content adaptation, generally you will not be able to open a newer route in older Trainz versions, as the older Trainz cannot read the newer file formats.

Rumors say that a final service pack for TS2009 may allow TS2009 to read TS2010 files.
