i am changing from windows 7 ultimate to windows 8.1
will i loose all my downloads on trainz 2004 or can i save them ?
someone please help.:'(

If you want to back your content up, you can copy the Trainz 2004 installation onto an external USB or hard-drive (or upload it to a Cloud service), and restore the backup, content included, after the upgrade.

With TRS2009 - TS12, you only need to back up the UserData folder as a minimum.

this is good to know as i have to do exactly the same thing, have my Trainz installation on an old XP system, as i was working with 2004 version also. i will try this method. thanks.

Chris,

You can also do this with TS12 as well. :)

Simply copy the complete N3V/TS12 directory, which also contains all your data under the User Data folder.

When the time comes, you can then copy this back to another PC or your current PC, create some short-cuts on your desktop, and you are off and running.

I wish all programs were this nice.

I am surprised no one mentioned or warned you that when you transfer these files from one operating system to another they are going to be treated as foreign files that will need administrator permission to override and access. It can be done, but if you have a lot of content, it will take a very LONG time because permission has to be granted for every single file.

I've never had an issue doing this and only once went through the permissions process which only took about an hour with my 568GB of user data.

I had big problems with permissions. Main thing being when I tried to edit an asset in Content Manager it would not let me do anything to it because it was locked.

My tech set up my new computer with me having admin rights over everything as i am the only one using it so i expect it will work out fine. thanks John for that note about the 2012 files. I dont use the 2006 version much so i dont actually have that one full of doownloads it is just the basic install. thanks again this was very helpful topic.

Chris

I am also searching for a similar solution but thanks to waterfall487 who already started the thread my confusion is almost clear now.
