Hi All, I just downloaded the UP ES44 C45ACCTE and it came up a RAR file, isn't that a file for the use of train sim 12 not trainz...can someone shed some light for me on this....thank you....Lou

No. A .rar file is a compressed file format similar to a .zip file. There a number of free utilities that will uncompress it into a .cdp. Just Google rar and you should be able to find what you need.

EDIT: Sorry, I'm a two-fingered typist -- and octis2 has a link!

Forgive my suspicious nature. RARs are often the compression of choice in torrents and the like, and when I've downloaded things from JR they were either CDP or ZIP files...

I thought the same when I read this forum post as well. Hmmm....

Same here, I've yet to see a JointedRail download come as a rar. It's always been ZIP and CDP files.

In JR's freeware section, some of there new hopper mega packs are also RAR. Nothing "Shady" going on here.... It's just a matter of personal preference when packaging as to whether you use RAR or ZIP. Personally, I use ZIP.

RAR is pretty much the de facto standard archive system and has been so for well over a decade. Nothing shady.

Yes, but ALL of the payware locos I've ever bought from JR (including the UP ES44's) were .cdp's

Perhaps in some quarters, but it's hardly ubiquitious, if it were why would JR have zips posted on their site right now? They certainly aren't from a decade ago.

I also do not accept that it's use in other places or that some content at JR proves conclusively that there is "nothing shady going on here", it tips the balance in favor of it all being on the up and up, but it's hardly conclusive.

All that being said, I am NOT asserting that the content was pirated or stolen, simply stated that it had crossed my mind.

That i would think is true. certainly if i did make a compressed archive file it would be .rar, as i dont use .zip that often, but i do not ever recall releasing a payware loco as .rar
