Japanese Snowplow action !

On the Konan Railway Owani Line, a combination of the JNR Ki105 snowplow car of the Ki100-class freight car and the Baldwin-Westinghouse electric locomotive ED221 was used to clear snow.
This year, the ED221 had a malfunction, so this season the motor car will be responsible for snow removal.

Due to the financial situation of the line, it has been announced that it will suspend operations at the end of fiscal year 2027, and there is a possibility that the line will be abolished as is, and there are voices saying that the ED221 may not return.
This is a scene of snow removal during seven visits between February 2009 and January 2024.
(The crossing alarm has been muted.)

Short consist freight run through some very pretty areas.

Replacement rails for some areas of the Ou Main Line and Uetsu Main Line were transported from the Sendai Rail Center via the Kitakami Line by the DE10 stationed at the Akita General Rolling Stock Center's Minamiakita Center.
This is the scene of a train loaded with rails racing down the Kitakami Line.

It's sad to hear about the line shutting down. The snow plow action is fascinating. I watched that video the other day.

Crystal clear 4k, 60fps cab-view of a heavy snow run on the Akita-Nairiku Line. This area is in the N.W. part of Japan, mountain valleys and high ridges all around. Most of the footage is rural or sub-urban, with the line running from Kakunodate in the South, through farmland, eerie forest, deep wooded canyons, and some nice bridge crossings, many different bridge types are seen.

With Japan being in the temperate zone, the countryside looks a bit like New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont especially with the snow.

Unlike the Northeastern US, Japan is an active subduction zone where the ground is lifting up as the Pacific plate is pushing underneath. This is what's causing their high mountains with steep slopes and in a way is what New England and eastern New York State looked like while that was active here. This is something we discussed while I took a class in geology and earth sciences as UMass-Lowell in 2009-2010.

Part two of the Akita-Nairaku Line.

"The Akita Nairiku Line is a local railway connecting Kakunodate(角館) Station in Semboku City with Takanosu(鷹巣) Station in Kitaakita City, Akita Prefecture.
In this feature, we present the second half of the Limited Express "Moriyoshi" journey, from Aniai (阿仁合) Station to Kakunodate (角館) Station.

Enjoy a magical journey through a mesmerizing world frozen in snow and ice!"
