I've joined the dark side (TRS22) - My Thoughts

S2.0 has its virtues. I live by the scrapbook, the ability to bulk delete content and baseboards, quick copy/paste, and the ability to move and rotate groups of objects. These capabilities should've been in Trainz since the early days, but then again I suppose Greg Lane and the early Brew Crew didn't expect Trainz to take off like it did.

But, Classic is still needed for a lot of things. It's not that I'm used to it, it's easier to accomplish things that are truly awkward in S2.0. That chartreuse green-yellow glow around selected assets is absurd. How about a simple marquee instead? That bright chartreuse makes it difficult to line things up such as catenary. I spent way longer in S2.0 placing catenary than I should have and the spline points were way off in space meters from where they should've been. I ended up ripping it out in Classic and had the wires hung in less than 5 minutes! It's all about making things easier and not more complicated. KISS.

I agree that the crew should focus on fixing things first, or perhaps fix a bunch of stuff and throw in a something new. What they do is exactly what Adobe, Avid, and so many other companies have done and are doing today. Come out with a new version, throw in a whole lot of features but overlook the glaring bugs that have plagued the program since version 1.0. N3V seriously needs to fix the AI driver engine. Running out of steam, pun intended but not really, isn't how things should work. AI drivers becoming daft because the program threads become stuck should be fixed by now. The problem has been acknowledged, now it's time to get cracking on it or at least release a bug fix to beta.

If you recall John these were things we highlighted when S2.0 was first released and N$V asked for feedback. We gave them the feedback and nothing was done. How long has S2.0 been out now? They even released Trains 2022 PE with these problems. Same old story, they ignore and move on. No surprise that I cancelled my Train+.

Trainz Simulator World Tour for PC, is this the TRS26?

Yes, I remember that now that you mentioned it. We were told at the time that this is all WIP and things will be updated and fixed. Oh, another thing that I forgot to mention is the dark bars on either side hiding the screen. Those show disappear when the palettes are hidden, again this is WIP too.

How long? Going on at least 5-years, I think.

I cannot recall the last time I had to jump back into Classic to do anything but each of us has our own preferred way of working.

While the yellow-green glow around selected objects can sometimes be too gross it does point out exactly which objects in an area have been selected while a marquee by itself will not. I often set up a filter to only select certain types of objects or sub-sets of objects and then use the Marquee Tool to draw a rectangle around an area. Only those objects identified in the filter will be selected and all others in the marquee area will be ignored. This is confirmed by the presence of the glow only around the filtered objects in the marquee area.

I have never created a route that uses catenaries (not a feature found outside the largest cities here) but I can see your issue there.

No, that's the Xbox version of Trainz coming to PC.

cheers
Me being so cynical with game devs and the general inshitification of everything these days, I would not be surprised if it ends up this way and that route building becomes a subscription only.

I don't see that happening, but this is N3V, so...

If it did happen, I would hope to see Trainzers down tools, stop posting in the forums, stop subscribing, stop releasing to the DLS, and give it a month.
Hopefully at that point, they would have seen the error of their ways.

Surveyor is one of the things that brings me back to Trainz each time, and without it, there are much better train driving alternatives out there.

Well, a long while back, N3V had a survey asking if there would be an interest in separating both Surveyor and Driver into separate Trainz products. You would pay for Surveyor only or Driver only modes and that would be it. How that would work I have no idea. How testing sessions would also be interesting.

As of typing, I couldn't find the link to it but if there is a huge interest, then I'll look around for it. It was a couple of years ago when this was asked.

cheers

Before I express any opinion, what was the consensus to that question? Was the results made public?

As far as I know of, no they weren't.

I forgot about this
Anyway I agree with the driving only aspects of other train sims out there. There is one where it can be played in either single or multiplayer that you can host the server yourself (as it uses peer to peer). Its also all prototype and are actual miles from the real thing.

cheers

I believe the newsletter mentioned this was soundly rejected by the community, and they planned to listen to that. But that's just my recollection.

I also have a vague recollection of that or something similar. There are Trainz users who never use Surveyor so providing a cheaper Driver only version would make sense for them. A Surveyor only version, however, would not make any sense, to me at least. How you would test the routes/sessions you created in a Surveyor only version, as pointed out by @hiawathamr, would be a mystery. But if there is a market for that then why not?

When it comes to the future of Trainz, all I want is a better emersive train sounds. Right now its horible to make traction motor sounds in Trainz. Going through juctions and curves isn't at all realistic. It's been the same for the 20+ years of the existance of trainz.

N3V should look at the new Japanese kid in the block RUNNING TRAIN. This is in my opinion how trains in the next version of Trainz should sound like. No exceptions or excuses.

If not. N3V should just hault devlopment of whatever they are working on and start again on a clean slate...

Unfortunately for us, as far as N3V are concerned.... 🎶 "It's all about the money..money..money.." 🎶

Yeah, they are nice engine sounds, with no cutting out or pops.

I don't understand why the woman keeps asking me if I like to play tennis though! :)
