Its been fun but "its goodbye"

When I got a new hard drive, I backed up everything as I was going to move it over to new drives. Backup went fine, but when I turned on the backup drive,(In an external case) the backup drive failed, I mean it really failed. I tried all the remedys to get it going including changing the board with one from a similar drive, but to no avail. I lost everything I had collected over the years , and not only trains stuff. So I am not going to reload trs at this point in time . Maybe someday, not sure at the moment.
So over the years it has been fun, I have gotten to know several people quite well and that friendship will always survive. I will probably read the forum every once in a while just to keep up with the gossip.
So happy trainzing to all.

Sorry to read you're sidetracked because of a bad drive. As a last resort you could always send it out to a drive recovery service. Not cheap but it depends on what the data is worth to you.

Having to start over from scratch would be really discouraging for anyone. No other backups? Even weeks or months old, they would have most of you files although I'm sure you already looked. :'(

Best I can say is enjoy your rest and time away. Perhaps one day the itch will become intense enough to get back into the game.

Hi Larry,

Sorry to hear you have lost a lot of content. Having spoken to you a number of times about many things I have an idea of what you may have lost.

Hopefully, some way or another you are able to get some of it back.

It will be sad not to see as often on the forum, you have been part of this "community" for a long time.

Take care,

Craig

It sounds like you may have tried this but just in case?

Was this a USB backup? drive have you tried removing it from the case and connecting direct to the IDE or SATA port on the PC, has often worked here when people have had "dead" USB backup drives.

Failing that if there is any life in the drive at all try Steve Gibsons Spinwrite from grc.com I have about a 20% success rate using it on peoples dead drives.

Also again if there is any life at all try using a Live Linux CD, sometimes Linux will read a drive when the bios won't.

Larry,

I can only hope that the situation gets resolved but if it does not it has been great getting to know you over the years. You have always been a great contributor to the community and we wish you the best and hope to see you back in action sometime along the road.

Take care and keep in touch!

Sorry to hear of your disaster. I had a slightly similar thing happen too hence my non-Trainzing these days.

Thanks for your contributions and creations over the years. For what it's worth many of us have enjoyed your efforts and your comments and advice on this forum.

I don't wanna sound trite but try and stay in good cheer; you've actually done a lot for this community.

Cheers

There is nothing worse then losing everything, I know, but there are ways to recover the data.

Have you tried another external case?

It may not be the drive itself but the case, I had a 300GB drive I thought failed too but when I put the drive into my system it worked fine, anyway it turned out to be the external case at fault and not the drive.

Just a thought.

Thanks for all the ideas, I tried them all. Freezing, different external case, different board on the drive, took cover off and manually spun disk from the center and that freed up the platter, plugged it in and it ran fro about 15 secs then died again, so yes I tried everything in the book. Below is a link to a story about a wolf. As you all know me as greywolf retired. My time at the moment is sorting through approx 20,000 photographs and am making a video memorial to this animal as I feel his story is amazing. so with that ,so long for now. If anyone interested go to wolfpark.org,it in Battlerground ,Indianna USA

One last way to recover to consider

If you really want to regain your data and not "retire" from TRAINZ, there are companies which can take your drive (for a fee) and recover the data by taking the platters out and mounting it on their own motor and then swinging special heads over the spinning media and reading off the data and putting it on another drive or just DVDs for you. It costs but since your drive did not crash while writing and the format is totally in tact, they should be able to get everything back to you to put on the new drive or they may be able to transfer it direct. Your call on spending the money,
=gerry=

May sound like a stupid question but have you tried Windows Check Disk ? I had a backup drive that failed or so it seemed. Tried spinrite and it was pretty much useless for this drive. Last attempt to recover was using the chkdsk commands. It recovered about 90% of what was on the drive.

Since greywolfretired already mentioned removing the cover to spin the platters by hand, and having them seize up again after 15 seconds of working, I think we can effectively rule out any real solution. It don't thing even the pro data recovery people will touch them once they have been opened.

I hope everyone who has been following this thread has made a backup :o

I have a backup of all my content on another drive, but it has been sometime since I backed everything onto DVD's.

I too at the moment thinking of getting an external Hard Drive, but I am not sure if a Western Digital or Seagate one is best. It would only be for Trainz content so a 500GB (or there about) would be enough for me.
