Is this "Mesh Library" any good?

I'd prefer to call them components, but I guess "mesh" is an appropriate word.

This mob claims to have 90,000 (yup, ninety thousand) of these little meshes in every shape and form. I had a quick peak and some are marked 3dMax, whilst others are marked with extensions I've never heard of. It's all mumbo jumbo to me, but maybe it will help solve a few problems. Can someone take a peak and report back? If it's any good, I'll list it in the Trainz Resources Directory.

Here's the Link

BTW, note the terms and conditions and disclaimer. All the stuff is free as far as I can tell.

Seems to be for identifying where the meshes came from.

Gotta note the term Mesh Library threw me since that is a TS2009 feature, I thought that was what you meant by the title.

I took a look, and I found some of the tranportation items intriguing. The site is affiliated with a university level computing center in France. I recognize some of the extensions as being to other graphics rendering programs which can be imported into Blender.

As to whether to list it in the Trainz Resources, or not, I'd suggest that the first step is to contact the Mssr. George, the contact person listed on the higher level page

http://www-roc.inria.fr/gamma/gamma/Accueil/index.en.html

and discuss this with him. At the worst, this will clarify how usable the meshes are based upon whether they can be modified by users; at best, we might find some talented creators of some pretty nifty 3d assets....

I think mesh is used by other modellers, but as I said I would call these things components rather than meshes. Most Trainz people wouldn't know what a component was, so "mesh" it was. They were the ones to use the term mesh library, so who am I to argue?

Most of the ones I checked have download links, but one did send me to a 404 page. Not too bad for a database containing 90,000 objects I guess.

I'm interest to know if the actual files can be used to create assets. If they can be, it will save a lot of people a whole lot of work.

I suspect that many of the items might be useful, but it would depend upon permissions. I think the best thing is to ask Mssr. George.

Sorry mjolnir , your earlier post crossed my last one and your last post crossed this one. I agree with your comments, but I'm really not the person to do that level of research. For starters, it's out of my depth to hold an intelligent conversation on that level, considering I don't do any 3d model making myself. There are several restrictions listed in the site, so private use seems to be the order of the day. Maybe someone will be interested enough to follow it up.

It is not that much research. All you do is send the site owner an email like this,
"Dear Sir,

I am a member of a community for a program called Trainz Railroad Simulator where several people make 3rd party content for use in the program. I found your site interesting and would like to let others know of it but would also like to clarify permissions regarding use of the models on the site. Some models do not exist in the Trainz program and others could be seen as learning tools for creators trying to make content. We don't like to take models and make them into content without knowing who can be credited for the orignal work if we get permission to use it for creations. Thanks for your time and assistance.

Sincerely,

(your name here)"
Pretty much the basic form of any letter for something like this. Worst case, you get no response after a few days, shrug and find something else. Usually good to check this way before posting links on any Trainz forum, if you get a negative or no response, then you never post a link.
Of course nothing from that site can ever be put on DLS.

I see where you're coming from, but the role of the Trainz Resources Directory is purely to list useful resources for modellers. It makes no guarantees, claims or representations about available products or copyright provisions on the links provided. People must decide for themselves how to use the material. If I changed that policy it could place me at risk.

If I decide to list the site I will do so with all the warnings attached. Being a Directory, I don't require permission to make a listing as long as I represent the site fairly, but I am obliged to remove a listing if asked.

If someone says the meshes are a valuable resource, I'll list the site. If someone here wants to communicate with them and come to an arrangement on behalf of other Trainz users, that's great. Unfortunately that person won't be me. It sets a precedent.

Thanks for replying. Any chance you can stick a stamp on your email and post it?

Edit: it's a well worded email.

I think this is well worth looking into. I just downloaded a car and opened it in Gmax and it is a very slick model. Of course it is 67,022 polys, so it would take a bit of editing to be useful in Trainz, and of course skinning, but the result would be worth it. It certainly looks like a resource I would like to play around with, if only to learn about how to go about creating stuff. Thanks for finding it and passing on the information. Hopefully we can clarify the permissions.

I forgot to mention file sizes. The 2001 Space Station Transporter, essentially a ball with four legs, is over 800kb.
