This is the HDD Trainz is installed on ( and yes it's backed up )

The drive seems to be running fine as far as I know but every time I reboot or startup lately it says it needs to be checked for consistency.

I have let it run & check the disk on boot up
As well as run error check & bad sector check from the disk tools
It gives me no indication anything has been found

Then on the next re boot / start up the same needs to be checked message

Does a System Restore help?

Maybe run System File Checker by booting from the Windows CD and try "repair" ? (Vista, I think with XP you just have the disc in handy if asked for.)

That message can mean several things;

1. Windows not shut down properly. (application hang)
2. Bad sector on HDD. (beyond repair)
3. PDF-window shut down while downloading.
4. PDF-virus.
5. Faulty RAM-module
6. Failing PSU
